$25. That's what it costs to buy a wild horse from the federal government right now — and a legal loophole means that horse could be on a truck to slaughter within days. 🐴 💔

The New York Times just exposed it: since the Trump Administration took office, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has sold off 3,700+ mustangs — horses that are supposed to be protected under federal law. But once the BLM sells a horse, that protection disappears, and many end up transported into Canada and Mexico to be slaughtered.

There's a bill sitting in Congress RIGHT NOW that would end this for good. 🛑

The SAFE Act (Saving America's Forgotten Equines Act) closes the loophole. It would prohibit horse slaughter in the U.S. and stop horses from being shipped abroad to be killed. It has bipartisan support, and just needs a vote.

25 horses were rescued in New York this week, just miles short of the route to a slaughter plant in Quebec. Instead of a slaughterhouse, they're now safe at a vet clinic, being prepped for adoption.

Horses shipped by Rotz Livestock have collapsed in transit, been trampled by other terrified animals crammed in beside them, and in one 2013 crash, 30 were killed when a trailer caught fire. Nearly 1,600 horses were shipped through NY for slaughter by this dealer last year alone.

This rescue didn't happen by accident. Investigators with Animals' Angels spent years documenting these transport routes and the New York State Humane Association flagged the activity to the Warren County DA's Office. Senator Dan Stec carried that evidence directly to prosecutors and police, and New York State Police worked alongside U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the USDA to make the stop.

Twenty-five horses get a second chance because people did the work to make it happen, but horses are trucked through New York toward slaughter every single year — and most never get pulled over in time.

The SAFE Act would end horse slaughter for human consumption nationwide. No more horses treated as cargo. No more trailers headed for the border. Every horse deserves better odds than a lucky traffic stop.

Political power is what turns "animal cruelty should be illegal" into "animal cruelty is illegal, and we'll defend that in court as many times as it takes." 🦆

In 2019, Voters For Animal Rights was an all-volunteer organization, spending nights and weekends working to pass NYC's foie gras ban. We're still in court defending that ban today.

Now the foie gras industry is trying to rebrand force-feeding as "humane." A recent Gothamist article admits the birds "initially struggle but freeze while they're fed." Let's be clear: freezing in fear while a tube is forced down your throat is animal cruelty, period.

They've also claimed VFAR and animal protection advocates are only targeting them because the foie gras industry is "small and lacks a powerful lobby in Congress."

While that's unequivocally false, this ban is still standing after years of legal challenges because animal advocates got organized. NYC voters elected officials willing to pass it. Advocates stayed in the fight, in court, year after year, to defend it, and we will continue doing so for as long as it takes.

If animal protection advocates hadn't built that political power — if we'd stayed on the sidelines instead of showing up at the ballot box or in City Council chambers — there would have been no ban to fight for in the first place.

🗳️ That's exactly why VFAR's mission is to build political power for animals: electing animal-friendly candidates, passing laws like the foie gras ban, and then staying in the fight to make sure those laws are actually enacted and enforced. Every one of those steps matters.

This is what a glue trap does: an animal steps on it and is stuck — not killed instantly, but trapped for hours or days. Panicked animals chew off their own limbs trying to escape. Many die slowly from exhaustion, dehydration, or suffocation as their nose and mouth get pulled into the glue.

Glue traps don't discriminate. Rodents, birds, kittens, squirrels — any animal who wanders too close ends up caught the same way. They're sold as ordinary rodent control, but there's nothing ordinary about the suffering they cause.

🦉 84% of dead birds of prey found in NYC tested positive for anticoagulant rat poison, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's Wildlife Unit.

Most bait boxes in NYC use poison that stops blood from clotting, causing a slow, painful death: rats bleed internally for several days before they die. During that time, a weakened rat is easy prey, so the poison — and the suffering it causes — moves straight up the chain.

Flaco, the beloved eagle-owl who escaped the Central Park Zoo, had four different rodenticides in his system when he died.

Meanwhile, NYC still has an estimated 3 million rats — this approach isn't even solving the problem it's meant to solve. It's just spreading a painful death further through the ecosystem.

The good news: there are ways to reduce rat populations that don't rely on poison. Rodent-proof trash containers, sealed composting, and blocking off burrows and food sources all reduce rat numbers by cutting off what rats need to survive — without harming the hawks, owls, and other wildlife that share our city.
