Fall foliage is beautiful, but fallen leaves can create problems when they accumulate around storm drains. During heavy rain, leaves and other debris can clog drains, preventing rainwater from flowing freely and contributing to street flooding.

As you clean up your yard this fall, be mindful of where those leaves end up. Never rake or blow leaves into the street or onto storm drains. A little extra care during fall cleanup can make a big difference during fall storms.

Winter may not be on your radar just yet, but now is the time to prepare your sprinkler system for the colder months.

If you haven’t already done so, schedule your sprinkler system winterization (also known as a “blowout”). Water left in pipes and valves can freeze when temperatures drop below 32 degrees, potentially causing cracks, leaks, costly repairs and higher water bills.

A little preparation now can save you a big headache later!

Montana Construction will return to Glen Avenue in Midland Park tomorrow, October 20, to continue work on the water main replacement project.

Preliminary excavation work is expected to continue through early November, followed by more extensive excavation throughout the winter to replace the water main. Please note that the schedule is subject to change based on construction progress, weather and other unforeseen conditions.

Work in Midland Park will be concentrated between Highwood Avenue and Erie Avenue.

Police officers will be on site to assist with traffic control and detours. Please plan ahead and allow extra travel time, as delays are expected.

We appreciate your patience as Ridgewood Water undertakes this important infrastructure improvement project.

As part of Ridgewood Water’s annual preventive maintenance program, utility crews will soon begin flushing all 1,767 hydrants in our four-town service area.

Hydrant flushing will take place from 9:00 pm to 4:30 am from October 11 through 16 (Sunday night through Friday morning) and October 18 through 23 (Sunday night through Friday morning).

During flushing, customers may experience temporary low water pressure or water discoloration. Discoloration is caused by mineral deposits dislodged during the flushing process and is not a health or safety concern.

If you experience discolored water, run cold water from the lowest tub or sink in your home for a few minutes until the water clears before doing laundry or running the dishwasher. Customers with home filtration systems are also encouraged to bypass them during flushing, as mineral deposits may accumulate in the filter.

Ridgewood Water offices will be closed on Columbus Day, Monday, October 12.

Please note that our water system operators are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week and remain available for water-related emergencies. If you experience a water emergency, please call 201-670-5520, extension 8.

Members of the Wyckoff Township Committee recently joined Ridgewood Water for a tour of the Ames and Cedar Hill PFAS Treatment Facilities. The visit offered a firsthand look at the advanced treatment technology Ridgewood Water is using to remove PFAS from drinking water and the significant investments being made to strengthen water quality and reliability in the communities we serve.

We appreciate the Township Committee taking the time to learn more about this important work.

Thanks to abundant rainfall over the summer and early fall, New Jersey has lifted the statewide drought warning that had been in effect since December 5, 2025.

All of the state’s drought regions will return to normal conditions except the Coastal South region, which is being moved from drought warning to drought watch status. The Coastal South region includes all Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties, as well as portions of Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Ocean and Salem counties.

Today, Ridgewood Water hosted a meeting of the NJ Drinking Water Quality Institute.

Under the purview of the Commissioner of the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, the Institute members are responsible for studying, evaluating and recommending Maximum Contaminant Levels or standards for hazardous contaminants in drinking water.

Richard Calbi, Director of Ridgewood Water, has been an active member of the Institute since 2020, and serves on the Treatment Subcommittee. After today’s meeting, members were given a tour of Ridgewood Water headquarters and the Ames PFAS Treatment Facility.
