Last week I had the opportunity to learn more about the exciting literacy initiatives being implemented by Henry County Public Schools, and I came away thoroughly impressed.

One of the most innovative programs I observed was the introduction of free book vending machines that will soon be appearing in our elementary schools. These unique machines will provide students with additional opportunities to access books, encourage reading, and help foster a lifelong love of literacy.

As someone who has always loved books, I firmly believe that literacy must remain a top priority in our community. Reading opens doors to knowledge, imagination, and opportunity, and every child deserves access to quality books.

I greatly appreciate Henry County Public Schools employee Tameia Easley for taking the time to demonstrate how the program will work and explain the positive impact it is expected to have on our students. It was also inspiring to hear about the tremendous support Superintendent Dr. Amy Blake-Lewis continues to provide for educational innovation throughout our school system.

Superintendent Blake-Lewis consistently brings forward creative ideas and initiatives that strengthen student learning and promote literacy, ensuring that our children have the tools they need to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Inspired by this initiative, I will be exploring how the Town of Ridgeway can partner with the Ridgeway Library to pursue grant funding opportunities that could bring a free book vending machine to our community in the future. Such a project would help expand access to books and further promote a culture of reading for residents of all ages.

The future is bright for Henry County students, and I applaud everyone involved in making literacy a top priority.
