If you hold your Mississippi medical license through the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact Commission, renewing it takes two steps, and both must be completed by June 30.

Step 1: Complete the Compact process and pay your renewal fee at imlcc.com.
Step 2: Answer your Mississippi renewal questions in MELS at gateway.msbml.ms.gov. No additional payment is required.

Paying is only Step 1. You are not renewed in Mississippi until Step 2 is complete. If both steps are not done by June 30, your license expires July 1.

Happy Mother’s Day from MSBML.

In 1850, a 31-year-old mother of two enrolled in the first class at the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania.

Her name was Hannah Myers Longshore. Her son Channing was eight. Her daughter Lucretia was five.

A year later, she earned her MD. That same year, she joined the college faculty, becoming one of the first women faculty members at an American medical school. According to the National Library of Medicine, she also became Philadelphia’s first woman physician in private practice, a role she held for forty years.

It was not a warm welcome. Pharmacists refused to fill her prescriptions. One told her to go home and darn her husband’s socks. Yet some of the same male physicians who refused to consult with her quietly sent their wives and daughters to her for care. At her peak, she treated around three hundred families.

She did all of it while raising her children.

Today, mothers practice across every specialty in Mississippi medicine. Every one of them stands on the path Hannah opened in 1851.

To the mothers caring for our patients: thank you. For every late call, every rearranged schedule, every quiet sacrifice. Mississippi is healthier because of you.

❤️ Happy Mother’s Day.

For Every Patient. For Every Provider. For Every Mississippian.
