On Saturday May 30 the Ridgefield Park Environmental Commission held their annual Earth Day Event. This took place at Riverfront Park on the banks of the Hackensack River.
There were booths set-up by local organizations, and activities to have a chance to engage with Nature and Science shows.
In past years Captain Bill Sheehan of the Hackensack River Keepers would have cruises in the Hackensack River. During the harsh Winter weather an Ice Flow seriously damaged the dock, which needed to be removed. No timeline for replacement has been announced.
Activities available that could be done included how to learn Archery with instructors from the Board of Recreation. There was a booth that offered facepainting. Along with a juggler who was joined by a woman, as a Sunflower, on stilts. An Ice Cream truck was on site for free small cups, or cones, of Chocolate or Vanilla.
Mr. Mark Rust provided live music throughout the afternoon.
The demonstrations were held in the Department of Public Works Garage. These were presented by Snakes and Scales, Reptiles and Raptors. Mad Science to show how science has created new items that are environmentally safe. The New Jersey Batman from The Wildlife Conservation and Education Center. Mr. Joseph D'Angeli talked about how bats can control the mosquitos. Also how to feed a bat some fruit. And the Tenafly Nature Center brought a Barred Owl, and a Red Tail Hawk for the audience to see. This allowed members of the audience to help with experiments or to see wild animals close up.
Story about the booths that were also on display will follow.
