The Access to Legal Services Committee established this page to achieve the following:
1. Notify attorneys about pro bono service opportunities;
2. Market free pro bono training programs sponsored by the VSB to address unmet or emerging legal needs of the indigent;
3. Raise the visibility and increase awareness by members of the legal community and the public of access to justice issues in Virgi
nia;
4. Boost the profiles of volunteer lawyers through recognition of outstanding pro bono service and promote pathways to participation; and
5. Enhance the development of a culture of pro bono in Virginia. The target audiences for this page include:
1. Private attorneys engaged in civil law practices;
2. Legal aid and non-profit legal services attorneys and pro bono coordinators;
3. Indigent criminal defense lawyers;
4. Administrators, professors, and students participating in civil legal aid and indigent defense clinics and pro bono programs at Virginia law schools;
5. Members of state, local and specialty bar organizations; and
6. The general public. Information posted on this page is not private or confidential. Any user, especially members of the Virginia State Bar, who abuses/misuses could be subject to potential professional or legal consequences. Additionally, the VSB Director of Access to Legal Services serves as the administrator for this page and is responsible for content management, screening, reviewing and updating content. The Director will have the discretion to remove materials and comments that are:
• potentially libelous,
• obscene or sexually explicit,
• hateful or mean spirited, profane,
• personal attacks, insults, profane, name calling, harassing or threatening-language,
• contain plagiarized material or material that potentially violates intellectual property rights or fail to provide proper attribution of the source material,
• in violation of the Rules of Professional Conduct, violate client confidentiality or are otherwise published without consent,
• encourage violation of the law or promote illegal activity,
• advertise commercial product/event/activity unrelated to access to justice issues or pro bono,
• spam,
• embedded images from external sources,
• political endorsements,
• off-topic or link to material that is off-topic,
• made under false pretenses, including comments by a person claiming to be someone else,
• otherwise in violation of the Policy Concerning the Use of Social Media on Behalf of the Virginia State Bar and its Entities. The Access to Legal Services Committee reserves the right to terminate a person’s ability to post comments/materials or otherwise participate in its social media tools if that person is determined to have posted any comments or materials listed above.
