Today’s prep step: KNOW your evacuation destination and routes.

Think about:
• Where you would go.
• More than one way to get there.
• Who you could stay with.
• What you would take.
• How you would travel if your normal route wasn’t available.

Your evacuation route may depend on the emergency. Always follow instructions from local officials.

Don’t wait for an evacuation order to start figuring out where you’ll go.

🤔🤔🤔What's YOUR guess for when the first hurricane of the season will form? Bonus points if you guess which name on the list will be the hurricane!🌀🌀🌀

This hurricane season is set to break records. We are at the typical "peak" of Atlantic Hurricane Season, and not only have we had only 5 named storms (thanks, El Niño)...we haven't even had a hurricane yet! The latest date the first hurricane of an Atlantic Hurricane Season formed was September 11 in both the 2002 and 2013 seasons, and there's nothing out there now that will magically turn into a hurricane today!

Hint: Only 2 seasons on record saw NO hurricanes at all (1907 and 1914)!

**These records are since the satellite era. Before satellites, we had no way of knowing if there were hurricanes that stayed out in the open waters unless ships spotted them!**

• Know where to get weather information.
• Keep more than one way to receive alerts.

During an active emergency, rely on verified sources and follow instructions from local officials.

Don’t wait until the next emergency to decide which sources you trust.

September is Su***de Prevention Month, an important reminder that conversations about mental health matter.

Within law enforcement, it can be easy to keep moving, handle the next call, and put your own well-being aside. But no one has to wait until things become overwhelming to reach out, talk with someone they trust, or ask for help.

This month, we encourage our VSPA community to keep looking out for one another. Check in with the people around you. Make time for the conversation. And remember that reaching out for yourself matters, too.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. If there is immediate danger, call 911.

One way to stand ready is to know basic first aid skills and keep a first aid kit at home.

FEMA’s preparedness toolkit encourages people to build skills that can help family, friends and neighbors during emergencies. Consider taking a first aid or CPR class through an organization in your community.

Today’s prep step: Check your first aid kit. Then consider learning a skill that could help someone when they need it most.

Preparedness is more than supplies. Sometimes it’s knowing what to do.

I-95 Traffic Alert (9/9/26): I-95 NORTH TO CLOSE OVERNIGHT NEAR I-295 IN HENRICO COUNTY

Impact to morning commute anticipated, Motorists should follow the posted detour

VDOT has closed I-95 at mile marker 85.1 near I-295 in Henrico County due to an overturned tractor trailer crash. The closure is anticipated to impact tomorrow morning's commute (Sept. 10).

Motorists should follow the posted detour which is to take Exit 84 to northbound I-295 to northbound Route 1 to eastbound Route 656 (Sliding Hill Road) back to northbound I-95.

Updated traffic information is available on 511Virginia at 511.vdot.virginia.gov and on the free 511Virginia app for mobile devices.
