Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail

Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail Official page of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail National Park Service or the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail commemorates, protects, and interprets the multicultural 1775-76 expedition by more than 240 men, women and children to settle the edge of the Spanish frontier and establish a mission and presidio in San Francisco. In the U.S., the trail extends 1,200 miles through 20 counties in Arizona and California -- from Nogales to the San Francisco Bay Area.

The historic route also includes 600 miles in northern Mexico, where the settlers of San Francisco originated.

The 1956 Relocation Act encouraged Native Americans to move from reservations to cities for vocational training. By the late 1950s, the policy led more than 50,000 Native people to San Francisco. In response, the Intertribal Friendship House (IFH) was founded in Oakland, becoming one of the first urban Native American community centers in the nation.

Alice Sanchez (Pomo, Choctaw, Hawaiian) shares a profound connection to IFH: her grandmother was a co‑founder, she grew up participating in community programs there, and today she continues that legacy as a board member.

The Intertribal Friendship House remains a gathering place for members of more than 100 tribes, offering cultural programming, community support, and public events that help keep traditions alive and the community strong. Destination Native America

🌈 Have you ever noticed that some color combinations are easier to read than others? Color contrast is not only important for readability but also for accessibility!

🎨A color contrast checker can measure the contrast ratio between foreground and background colors. It will give you a rating to help ensure text is readable and meets accessibility standards, such as Section 508: https://www.section508.gov/
