Just a little PSA! Raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes etc are often thought to be nocturnal only and cause a public panic when seen out during the day. The truth is....... they are primarily nocturnal BUT often are out during the day for a variety of reasons.... they may be looking for food, their home may have been disturbed, or it could be a mother looking for a break from her babies! If you see one of these animals simply just outside during the day that is not a reason to panic or call Animal Control or the Police department. BUT if you see one of these animals out during the day (or night) and it ALSO is foaming at the mouth, panting, falling down, spinning in circles, looks sickly, running in traffic etc THAT is a reason to call us! Now is also the time where babies of all kinds are getting big enough to explore the areas around their dens so you will OFTEN see babies alone as they explore... again this is completely normal. When these babies are out exploring, they look TINY, but they are pretty self-sufficient and the last thing they need is human interaction. If you handle wildlife and it scratches/bites you (natural instinct for them!) they have to be tested for rabies and unfortunately the only way to do that is to put them down. PLEASE respect our wildlife, give them room to grow/explore and "catching them to help them because they're out during the day" separates them from a fur family waiting for them! Friendly reminder...... 4th of July is approaching quickly.... if your dog requires anxiety meds NOW is the time (if not already) to contact your vet if you need a refill!! please do NOT wait until Friday (or worse Saturday!) YES, independent aerial fireworks in RI are illegal... YES someone will still set them off! Ground fireworks are legal and those are just as loud! If your dog is scared of fireworks (thunder, loud noises etc) please do NOT leave them outside, in fenced in yard, tied out etc.....they CAN and WILL break free! We have a large uprise in "runaway" dogs during times like 4th of July and want to make sure all our furry friends are safe! Stay smart, stay safe and Happy (almost) 4th!

Richmond Animal Control has an amazing following and the best luck finding great homes for our furry friends! With our last batch of adoptees already out the door, I wanted to take a minute to post some gorgeous girls who are available for adoption right over at Hopkinton Animal Control! Meet Miss Mittens and Cali!
Miss Mittens is an absolutely beautiful black and white semi medium haired, female kitty who is about a year old. She is up to date on vaccines and spayed. She is SUPER sweet, loves pets and meows up a storm for them! She loves cats and would do ok with a dog that knows how to behave around cats! lol
Cali...... I could go on forever about this AMAZING couch potato who has affectionately earned herself the nickname of "Land Hippo". She is absolutely stunning with one piercing blue eye. Cali is 5 years old, fixed and up to date on shots. (honestly, I would LOVE to take her myself if I didn't have a full house already!) Cali LIVES for love! She doesn't seem phased by cats (although has only been tested through kennel doors) and she can be dog selective so if you have a 4-legged friend at home it would need to be a meet and greet to see if they match. Cali is short and squat (and WIDE but shhhhh don't tell her I said that!) She thinks she's a lap dog and perfectly content sleeping the day away in a comfy sunny spot. LOVES kids! I’ve been meaning to make a post about baby bunnies as we’ve gotten an increase in call for them lately, I kept forgetting the post until I received a text today, looking for assistance. This is the time of season we will see LOTS of baby bunnies! Bunnies are funny little creatures who grow extremely fast and are fully capable of leaving their nest forever by one month old. At this time, bunnies look extremely tiny to people often about the size of the palm of your hand, but they do survive out on their own! If you locate a small rabbit that does not seem in distress or injured then please just leave it be! chances are it has left the nest and is doing just fine! Another fun fact is the mother does not stay with the nest and generally comes at dawn and dusk for feeding of the babies. Last year, I had my first bunny nest encounter in my own yard and was so worried because Mom was not there. I quickly learned that she’s usually not there! lol best advice I received from a Wildlife Rehabber if you believe that a nest has truly been abandoned is to put string lying crisscross loosely over the top of it and check again the next morning, if strings have moved, mom returned.

THIS is why we always ask you to please do NOT feed/touch stray cats (and all stray animals) even the absolute cutest little furballs can carry deadly diseases! If you routinely feed stray cats you become their legal owner meaning you are legally responsible for everything that goes along with that including spay/neuter, vaccines, medical treatment etc. if you see stray animals please do not approach, do not attempt to feed/pet/play with, do not attempt to capture! Call us! That’s what we are trained to do! (You do NOT want to end up having to get rabies shots because you “just had to save the cat!”)

JUST A REMINDER!! Richmond and Hopkinton Animal Control will be holding a combined Rabies clinic THIS SUNDAY APRIL 12TH FROM 9AM-11AM at Richmond Animal Control 51 Buttonwoods Rd.
You do NOT need to be Richmond resident to attend. Cost is $10 CASH (only!) per animal. If you have a current non expired rabies certificate, please bring it with you to receive a 3-year vaccine, if your animal is not currently vaccinated/has expired certificate or you do not have the current certificate your animal will receive a 1-year vaccine (no exceptions.) All dogs must be leashed, and all cats must be in a carrier. If you have a skittish, dog/people aggressive dog please leave dog in your vehicle and come find an Animal Control Officer, we will have the vet come to your vehicle for vaccine. If your pup requires a muzzle when going to the vet, please have a muzzle or advise us that you need one when you arrive prior to removing animal from your vehicle.

As Easter is fast approaching and Easter festivities are beginning I just wanted to get this post out there…..Please do NOT run out and buy a bunny as an Easter present UNLESS you have fully done research and understand what you are committing to! Sadly within months of Easter (EVERY year) we will respond to domestic rabbits that have been dumped to fend for themselves…. Rabbits that were purchased without the knowledge that a rabbit is hard work and not just a cute furry “toy” for your child! The spring is generally known as “kitten season” in the Animal Control world because that’s when our litters start happening but more and more each year it’s become “rabbit season” as we rescue the rabbits that are no longer a fun “toy” for you or your child after Easter. Please think twice

Richmond and Hopkinton Animal Control will be doing a joint rabies clinic this year on APRIL12TH from 9AM-11AM at Richmond Animal Control 51 Buttonwoods Rd, Richmond (public works building next to the transfer station). Cost is $10 CASH per animal.
ALL cats MUST be in carriers and dogs must be leashed. If you bring current rabies certificate showing animal is up to date on current vaccine then you will receive a 3-year vaccine, if no paperwork it will be a 1-year vaccine..... NO EXCEPTIONS!

PLEASE SEE ALL INFORMATION BELOW AND HOW YOU CAN HELP!

As reported in the Press Release, eighteen (18) animals were seized and transported to foster locations in Hopkinton and Richmond so they could receive proper food, water, shelter, and care. Since being relocated to the foster locations on February 5th, their health continues to improve! Richmond Animal Control does not have a budget for livestock and the budget we do have for domestic animals (cats/dogs etc.) is not equipped for a cruelty case like this. Our expenses and the expenses of fosters for food/hay/medical/supplies etc. have been astronomical! We are making it work but could definitely use your support! We have put together a Donation drive to help support the animals/fosters/us. We decided to do a direct donation drive vs a go fund me so every dollar will go directly to the animals. Information is in post below. Beside monetary donations we would also GLADLY accept gift cards to places like Tractor Supply, Agway, Allie’s Tack and Feed (really any gift card to places that sell hay/grain/treats/supplements/minerals OR if you have a Hay (bales OR round bales) or silage connection!!!.... We go through A LOT of hay!!! A LOT! (Bonus points if they deliver! I thought my new van was huge but after a few hay bale pick up runs…. I’ve discovered it’s not! Also as a newly self-proclaimed not so-farm "farm girl" I have learned round bales CANNOT be transported in a van!....who knew?!
We understand times are tough for everyone and understand if you cannot donate but please at least share! If you cannot share from this post (certain sites have sharing restrictions) you can share directly from Richmond Animal Control page which is a public page (make sure it is Richmond RI).
A MASSIVE shout out goes to our 4 AMAZING fosters who stepped up without a hesitation for transport, housing and care for these animals. From medical appointments, covering expenses, to baby watch duties and everything in between I can say I would be 1 million percent (100% is not enough) lost without all of their guidance, knowledge and selflessness they have shown this last month. Myself (and most importantly the animals) have been beyond blessed to have these amazing humans put in our lives and these animals have the absolute best chance at a happy future because they opened their homes and hearts.
