"Framing historic preservation review as responsible for project challenges is a bit like blaming a building inspector for identifying a cracked foundation. The very purpose of consultation is to surface issues early in the process — helping avoid unnecessary harm to historic places and more costly delays later." ~Erik Hein, Executive Director, NCSHPO

The conversation about permitting efficiency should start with one simple reality: most Section 106 reviews move forward without adverse effects or mitigation agreements.

The focus is often on the small number of complex projects, not the thousands of routine reviews completed each year by agencies, applicants, SHPOs, THPOs, Tribes, and other consulting parties.

If the goal is greater predictability, one of the most effective steps Congress could take is ensuring SHPOs and THPOs have the resources to meet this workload.

Which one fits your dream home better?

Craftsman Bungalows tend to feel lower, cozier, and more handcrafted, with broad porches and exposed wood details. American Foursquares are taller and boxier, with hipped roofs, practical layouts, and a more efficient family-oriented form.

It’s time again for Terminology Tuesday! Each week, we’ll unpack a preservation term, explaining what it means and where to find it on historic properties. Today, let’s talk about 𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬. A pediment is a triangular gable found above doors, windows, or porticos, commonly found in architectural styles with classical influences. The Greater Cincinnati region’s historic churches and public buildings frequently showcase pediments at entrances, such as this former Carnegie library in Covington, which features a large pediment above the entrance, above the frieze reading “PVBLIC LIBRARY.”

🏆️🎉 We're happy to announce that AP Development LLC has received Indiana Landmarks’ 2026 Cook Cup for Outstanding Restoration for its $13 million transformation of Crawfordsville’s former Ben-Hur Building into apartments and meeting space, a project that revived one of the city’s most prominent downtown landmarks.

“The transformation of the Ben-Hur Building is exactly the kind of project the Cook Cup is meant to recognize,” says Brad Ward, president of Indiana Landmarks. “This restoration didn’t just save an architecturally significant building, it reactivated a cornerstone of downtown Crawfordsville. It’s a powerful example of how historic preservation can drive meaningful revitalization.”
