The Friends meet up again after our summer break. Join us this Thursday 7:00 at the Round House for updates on our beautification, erosion, and maintenance projects in the pipeline.

It might look a bit unkempt but you'd be amazed what shows up in the No Mow areas of the Park.

Thanks to a Conserve the Future grant, Bloomistry (Conner Parrish) is offering a FREE "Pollinators in the Park" class on Wednesday August 12 from 10:30-11:30 for children ages 4-8 (accompanied by an adult). Meet at the Round House.

Conner teaches classes all over Richmond including Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and University of Richmond. His classes are always full because he makes learning accessible and experiential. We are very fortunate to be able to offer his classes for free right here in Byrd Park!

Space is limited to 20 children. Register here

ADOPTION OPPORTUNITY. Here's another pair of Muscovy Ducks recently "donated" to the park. They're hanging around Shields Lake and are in dire need of a good home. They seem very docile and should be easy to round up. Just let us know if you've taken them home so we can stop worrying about their fate.

SO many Canada Geese hanging around the Park right now. It's molting season so they can't fly (watch for their downy feathers on the ground).
Of course it doesn't help when people dump loaves of bread--right next to the No Feeding signs.

Happy to report that a good citizen has adopted the Muscovy Ducks. Thanks to all for your concern about their welfare.

To the family that dropped off the Muscovy Ducks at Fountain Lake: Please understand that if you can't take care of them, there is no one to do so in a public park. There is no feeding program for them here. From past experience, the fatality rate for domestic geese and ducks is very high. They are simply not constituted for this setting. Thank you and whomever else might be considering this option for understanding that this is not in the best interest of these creatures.

Those of you who walk around Fountain Lake may be wondering what’s going on with all the tree removal. The lovely Bradford Pears have aged out and will be replaced in the fall with a different flowering native tree variety.
