🚨Retirement of K9 Gunnar 🚨 This legendary duo was the epitome of excellence in the RPD. We are a little bias but we truly believe Ofc. Hodges and K9 Gunnar is possibly the best team the Bay Area has ever seen. Cheers to an outstanding career! 🎉

Last night was Officer Hodges's last shift patrolling our city's streets with his partner, K9 Gunnar. Officer Hodges and K9 Gunnar became a working canine team in March of 2017. During their tenure, K9 Gunnar assisted Officer Hodges in recovering over 55 fi****ms and well over 500 wanted criminals. They were so effective as a team that Officer Hodges was voted in by his peers as Officer of the Year for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021! Never before as an officer received the honor of being voted Officer of the Year for five years consecutively!

Even though last night was his last shift, Officer Hodges and K9 Gunnar did not relax. They started their shift by assisting a local agency in apprehending two suspects who were in the process of burglarizing a residence! For all his hard work, K9 Gunnar was given a handmade canine-friendly cake, which he happily scarfed down.

K9 Gunnar will live out the rest of his life with Officer Hodges and his family, while Officer Hodges transitions to Detective Hodges next Monday.

Congratuations on a well deserved retirement Gunnar! We thank you for your service to our city and to most definetly making out streets a safer place!

🚔 New K9 Team Announcement 🚔

We want to welcome our newest K9 Team, Ofc. Mallari and K9 Grim. K9 Grim is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois from Poland. This team recently completed a rigorous 8-week basic handler course.

Just two weeks after going 10-8 (in-service), Ofc. Mallari and K9 Grim were called to assist with locating a dangerous felon that was driving a stolen box truck. The suspect intentionally reversed into one of our patrol vehicles, nearly crushing one of our officers. The suspect fled the scene on foot and was later located by K9 Grim. Follow the story

RPD K9 Unit apprehends kidnapping suspect in a stolen vehicle.

Yesterday, an alert RPD K9 officer on routine patrol observed a van driving recklessly. The officer attempted to stop the van, and it tried to flee from the officer. The officer could see a female in the passenger seat frantically waving at him, who appeared to be in distress. The officer, believing the victim was being held against her will, continued to pursue the vehicle into the City of Oakland. The driver ultimately fled from the van on foot after driving onto a dead-end street. Officers pursued the suspect on foot and took the suspect into custody after a short struggle.

Officers later confirmed that the female was being held against her will in the vehicle. They also determined that the van was reported stolen and the suspect had outstanding warrants for his arrest.

The alert K9 team rescued the victim from a dangerous situation and took a dangerous felon off our city streets. Good job!
