Recently, the Department of Criminal Justice Training Law Enforcement Basic Training Class 571 honored the legacy of Michael P. Murphy by completing the “Murph” workout during physical training.

Despite challenging weather conditions and steady rain, the recruits pushed through the demanding workout with determination and resilience. Several recruits further intensified the challenge by wearing 16-pound weighted vests throughout the event.

Lt. Michael Murphy, a Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor recipient, gave his life in service to his country during Operation Red Wings in Afghanistan in 2005. The “Murph” workout is performed across the nation to honor his sacrifice, courage and commitment to others.

🥇We would like to thank all the recruits and staff who participated on Friday in DOCJT’s leg of the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. A hallmark of policing and public service is showing up for one’s community, and these recruits continue to demonstrate that commitment through every step.

🏃‍♂️ Let the games begin!

On Friday morning, DOCJT Basic Training recruits and staff gathered at the Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial to kick off the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run, carrying forward a tradition that has changed lives for more than four decades.

Before the run began, Assistant Training Director Chip White told recruits never to underestimate the opportunity they have as officers to make a difference.

“This is such an important project for us to be a part of, and we can all learn what kind of impact you can have in your own communities when you put passion into something you really believe in,” he said.

White said that the Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 in Kansas with just six officers who raised $300. Forty-five years later, the event now earns more than a billion dollars globally for Special Olympics programs.

DOCJT is proud to continue that tradition and support the incredible athletes, families and communities that make Special Olympics Kentucky so extraordinary.

❤️💙 Please join us in wishing all Special Olympics Kentucky athletes the very best as the games get started!
