The White House of the Confederacy

The White House of the Confederacy Historic home that served as Confederate President Jefferson Davis' executive mansion. Guided tours examine daily life in the house during the Civil War.

One of The American Civil War Museum's three locations. The house built in 1818 for a prominent Richmond banker is best known for its time as the executive mansion of Confederate President Jefferson Davis during the American Civil War. During Reconstruction, the house served as headquarters for Military District No. 1. It then became one of Richmond's first public schools from 1870 to 1890, before being saved from demolition and turned into a museum by the Confederate Memorial Literary Society. After serving as a museum for 80 years, the house was painstakingly renovated and has been open for daily guided tours since 1988.
