About Us
In January 2016, Dr. Brian Brodeur founded the Veterans Writing Workshop of Richmond, Indiana. This community engagement project is a creative-writing workshop designed to help military veterans tell their stories by providing multi-genre writing workshops free of charge. This group meets from 2:30-4:00 pm on the second Saturday of each month, including summer. There is no restriction on form, genre, or content. In other words, the work of attendees does not have to focus on themes relating to the military or to war, though these, of course, are welcome.
Meetings are typically dedicated to the development of original fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction written by workshop attendees. But Dr. Brodeur will occasionally share brief pieces written by “professional” poets, fiction writers, and nonfiction writers in order to illustrate a specific element of craft that is relevant to the work of attendees. Recently, for example, Dr. Brodeur distributed photocopies of an excerpt from Raymond Carver’s short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” which the group read and discussed in light of the author’s efficient and evocative creation of scenes. During this discussion, Dr. Brodeur asked the group to consider scene-creation as a means of slowing time down—as opposed to summary, which speeds time up. Afterward, Dr. Brodeur asked the group to complete a writing prompt focusing on scene, then to share with the group what each member had drafted.
