On 09 September 1957 the Unit was transferred to Galax, VA where they held drills in various locations within the Galax area. Completion of the Armory was effective on 12 January 1960, the date on which it is dedicated to PFC Curtis B. Schooley, Company K, 38th Infantry, 2nd Infantry Division, was Killed in Action in Korea on 12 February 1951. He was credited with Active Duty from 12 October 1942
to 21 January 1946 and from 17 October 1950 to 12 February 1951. His photograph and his many medals are on display in the main lobby of the Armory. Among these awards were the Bronze Star Medal (Posthumously) for exemplary conduct; Purple Heart (Posthumously); Good Conduct Medal; World War II Victory Medal; American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal w/3 bronze service stars; Army of Occupation Medal w/Germany Clasp; Korean Service Medal w/bronze service star; United Nations Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Reopublic of Korea Presidental Unit Citation Badge and Combat Infantry Badge. On 22 September 1961 the Unit was activated and mobilized in Galax, VA. The Unit was then transferred to Fort Meade, MD on 25 October 1961. They served with distinction until they were released from Active Duty on 10 August 1962. On 21 November 1990 the Unit was activated and mobilized to Fort Pickett, VA in support of Operation Desert Shield. On 02 January 1991 the Unit deployed to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, where they served with distinction until released from Active Duty on 10 May 1991. On 16 September 1994 the Unit was reorganized and relocated to Richmond, VA, where we are now, in the Monteith USAR Center. On 07 September 2005 the Unit was activated and mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where they served with distinction until released from Active Duty after serving 545 days of Active service. On 29 November 2009 the Unit was activated and mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where they served with distinction until released from Active Duty after serving 400 days of Active service. The mobilization site was Fort Eustis, VA and we are 30 miles away from a support installation, which is located in Fort Lee, VA.
