🚨 SCAM ALERT | PLEASE SHARE 🚨
The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office is warning the community about a scam involving individuals impersonating Deputy Sheriffs and contacting family members of individuals who have recently been arrested.
🔹 Scammers may have information about your loved one’s arrest making the call sound legitimate.
🔹 They may identify themselves as a Deputy Sheriff, provide a fake badge number, or use other law enforcement terminology.
🔹 They may claim your loved one will remain in jail unless you immediately send money for their bond or release.
🔹 They may instruct you to pay through Venmo, Cash App, gift cards, or another electronic payment method.
🔹 DO NOT SEND MONEY. The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call you and demand payment over the phone to secure someone’s release from jail.
🔹 If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and independently contact the appropriate law enforcement agency using a verified telephone number.
🔹 Never rely solely on the caller ID, phone number, name, badge number, or information provided by the person calling you.
⚠️ Remember: Scammers create urgency and fear to keep you from stopping to verify what they are telling you.
STOP. VERIFY. DON’T SEND MONEY.
Don't think it can't happen to you-because this is a scam that unfortunately was successful today.
Please share this warning with your family, friends, and neighbors. Awareness can prevent someone else from becoming a victim.
