We want to take a moment to highlight an important occasion: June 12th marks Women Veterans Recognition Day, a day dedicated to honoring the service and contributions of women in the U.S. military. This date is especially significant as it commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act in 1948 by President Harry S. Truman. This landmark legislation allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and the newly established Air Force. Prior to this act, women’s roles were largely limited to temporary assignments or service as nurses, making the passage of this law a pivotal step forward for gender equality within the military—even though it initially included restrictions on the number of women who could serve and their advancement in rank.

Women Veterans Recognition Day not only celebrates this historical milestone but also shines a light on the unique contributions and challenges faced by women Veterans. Historically, women have often been underrepresented and sometimes overlooked in military recognition. This day is a meaningful opportunity to educate the public, honor women’s service, and raise awareness about the benefits, healthcare, and support programs available to women Veterans.

As the number of women Veterans continues to grow, it’s vital that their service is acknowledged and respected. Recognition like this helps ensure that the achievements and sacrifices of women Veterans remain visible and valued in our communities.

Thank you for joining in honoring Women Veterans and supporting their ongoing journey.

Why It’s “Women Veterans Recognition Day” – Not “Women Veterans Day”

On June 12th, we celebrate women Veterans and honor their incredible contributions, but it’s important to recognize the true meaning of the date and its official name.

June 12, 1948 marked a turning point in history: The signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act granted women the right to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Forces. That’s why we honor Women Veterans Recognition Day.

Today, and every day, let’s celebrate service, remember history, and continue to uplift stories.

Last Friday was about more than just fishing—it was about connection, healing, and a breath of fresh air by the water.

Veterans from the Central Virginia area spent the day at the pier, casting lines, sharing stories, and enjoying the calm that only a day of fishing can bring. Recreational therapy creates opportunities like this to support physical and emotional well-being, and moments like these remind us just how powerful that can be.

From the excitement of a catch to the quiet conversations in between, every second mattered. Thank you to everyone who helped make this trip possible and to our veterans for letting us be part of your journey.

Today we honor the nearly 160,000 Allied troops stormed the shores of Normandy. Thousands of brave Americans faced heavy fire, cleared mined beaches, and scaled staggering cliffs in the largest seaborne invasion in history.

You helped free a continent, protect our nation, and preserve liberty.

To those who did not come home: your sacrifice will be remembered. Always.
