Yesterday we were thrilled to host students across the university at our welcome back event!

The Back Porch at the Anderson was a huge success thanks to all who attended! Whether you joined us to just chat and grab a drink, check out the exhibitions, sing, or print with us, we hope you all had a wonderful break from your classes to make new friends and make some art!

Meet Lena Nagle, an Art History senior here at VCUarts who alongside her storytelling guide job for Strange Richmond Tours, spent this past summer researching St. John’s Church and the city’s colorful past through her internship with the St. John’s Church Foundation. St. John’s is the oldest church in Richmond dating back to 1741. Nagle has also served as a volunteer docent at Richmond’s Poe Museum.

Nagle met St. John’s archivists through a project she completed for a Richmond Cemeteries class taught by history professor Ryan Smith, Ph.D., about the recent burial of the church’s beloved cat, Charlie.

For her St. John’s internship, Nagle received financial support from VCU’s Internship Funding Program, which helps students cover costs related to summer internships. The assistance allowed her to focus on her work at the church without needing additional jobs to pay rent.

“This is a really amazing and life-changing experience,” Nagle said. “It feels like reconstructing the past and understanding how different the city was throughout time.”

Supported by VCU’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, art education senior Emma Flory spent the summer developing a research project where she explored the history of the camera as an optical instrument and its relationship to impartiality. Flory dove into examining both traditional darkroom techniques and digital methods to study how photos are made and altered.

“A lot of people believe photography to be a very neutral ground, and something that only perpetuates truth,” she said. “But even before the digital camera, we had photographic manipulation,” such as 19th-century spirit photography that used double exposure to create a ghostly image. “It brings into question this idea that we want to believe in this objective source of truth, but is it really there?” - Flory

Meet Pete Peterson, a VCUart’s ‘23 Cinema alum who works part time as a projectionist at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown when he’s not working on film projects. Pete doesn’t hesitate to recommend the historic movie house to students and encourages them to see some of their favorite movies there, new or old.
