Vocal Virginia

Vocal Virginia No one fights harder for a cause than someone who has been directly affected by it. When it comes to mental health, Vocal Virginia speaks
from experience.

Vocal Virginia advocates with and for the mental health community by sharing a unique, experience-driven perspective that empowers us to educate with empathy and collaborate with care. As leaders who face our own mental health challenges, we bring a unique perspective to advocacy, education, and

Sometimes we hear that the body is “resisting” or that something simply needs to “release.”

But what if nothing is going wrong?

If our nervous systems have spent years becoming familiar with certain responses, it makes sense that one exercise—or even one good experience—may not immediately change them.

That’s one reason to appreciate this short from sheBREATH. Somatic practice doesn’t have to be about forcing a particular response or finding the right “hack.” It can be about repetition: experimenting with different kinds of input, noticing what happens, and gradually becoming more familiar with other options.

Sometimes something shifts. Sometimes it doesn’t. Both can give us information.

That idea is at the heart of Vocal Virginia’s upcoming **This Makes Sense in the Body: Practical Tools for Nervous System Regulation**. We’ll explore body-based practices not as prescriptions or quick fixes, but as opportunities to notice, experiment, and build a little more choice over time.

Your body doesn’t need to become the enemy in order for change to happen.

COVID changed more than where and how we received mental health support. It changed how we talked about mental health, how we connected with one another, and what many of us came to expect from our communities and systems.

Years later, what has actually lasted?

Join Vocal Virginia for our September Community Q&A as we take stock of the mental health landscape since COVID: what changed, what improved, what gaps became harder to ignore, and what we may still be carrying forward.

As always, this is a conversation—not a lecture. Bring your questions, observations, lived experience, and professional perspectives.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the way we talk about, experience, and respond to mental health.

Come be part of a conversation where stories are welcomed, experiences are honored, and every voice contributes to the bigger picture. Together, we'll reflect on what has helped, where gaps still exist, and what opportunities we see for building a stronger behavioral health system that supports recovery for everyone.

This is a chance to listen, learn from one another, and discover that you're not alone in your experiences. Your story can inspire new ideas, strengthen advocacy efforts, and help shape positive change for individuals and families across our communities.

Somatic practice doesn’t always require a mat, special clothing, a quiet room, or a big time commitment. Sometimes it can be as small as one deliberate movement you can try almost anywhere.

This short from sheBREATH is a simple example of how subtle body-based practices can be.

Knitting, gardening, and other hands on, old-fashioned activities can be more than just relaxing—here’s what they can do for your brain, mood, and more.
