Caught a quick glimpse of Conrail SD40-2 #6397 toting some pickups from the Scranton Industrial track back to the Pitt Yard. Always great railfanning on the Patcong Valley RR.

🚂 How We Make the Magic — Understanding DCC Power
Ever wonder how Digital Command Control (DCC) works? It’s not just electricity — it’s digital communication riding on the rails.

🔹 Step 1: Digital AC Signal The track carries a 12 volt square wave AC signal. Each pulse contains both power and data — short pulses mean “1,” long pulses mean “0.” That’s how commands reach every locomotive.

🔹 Step 2: Bridge Rectifier Inside each decoder, diodes convert that alternating digital signal into direct current (DC). This lets the electronics inside the locomotive use steady power.

🔹 Step 3: Filter & Power Capacitors smooth the DC voltage, removing ripple so lights stay bright and motors run smoothly.

🔹 Step 4: DC Power & Control The decoder’s microchip interprets the digital packets and sends precise voltage to the motor, lights, and sound system — giving each train independent control on the same track.

Whoops, oh darn!! Just a little ruckus from a missed signal. A Southern heavy freight missed a stop signal, rolled around the curve and straight into the rear of a local shifter that was stalled on the main line. A catenary highline construction crew had a front row view of the wreck. No injuries except the engineers pride. You never know what you’ll see when visiting the Patcong Valley Model Railroad.
