Friends of Richland Library

Friends of Richland Library We are a group of people, families and organizations that understand how important a local library is to our community.

We want to make sure the citizens of Richland are aware of the many services that are available to them through the Richland Library. Richland Friends of the Library sponsors fundraisers to earn money for things the library needs that are not covered in it's annual budget and also helps out with events such as the Summer Reading Program.

A few weeks ahead of the need to make Halloween treats. From our archives at Richland Library. We used to make many of these every October and they are very yummy to eat. Happy Readings!

From the archives: An old cookbook filled with wonderful favorite recipes collected by early members of the Friends of the Richland Library. This old cookbook was one of our first major fundraisers. As with all of our fundraisers, one-hundred percent of the funds were used to support Richland Library.

The book for September is Mark Twain's delightful maybe-history of the ruling House of Tudor in England, "The Prince and the Pauper." The prince in this story is Henry VIII's only son, Edward, who is destined to rule after his father for only a short few years. Could this be a true tale? Check it out at Richland Library or one of its sister branches in the Central Mississippi Regional Library System. True or not, it is a grand story and it very well may have been true. Happy Readings!

The book report for the month of April, 2024, is a captivating 1934 detective mystery by acclaimed writer, Dashiell Hammett, by the name of The Thin Man. This book represents a change in his style of detective fiction even though he did not write many more like this one. The Movie Studio, MGM, had a major smash success with the movie version starring William Powell and Myrna Loy and produced several more of these light-hearted works of detective fiction. We hope you enjoy this one and if you want more, your favorite library has The Thin Man movies in digital form that you can borrow just like a regular book. Pop some pop-corn and enjoy your evening with Nick and Nora Charles and their dog, Asta.

Our Story

We organized during the month of March, 1986, having our first meeting on a Thursday night. Minutes for the early meetings have been lost; so we do not remember all who were the first, or charter, members. Our dues were set at $5.00 for the individual, $7.50, for a family membership and a Junior Friends membership was, if memory serves, a mere $2.00. One of our most popular fund-raising events was our annual “Big Rummage Sale.” It took place on a Saturday in September and the first one was on the parking lot of a local grocery store. Shoppers arrived before dawn and we pulled a few of our cars close enough and turned headlights on so we could have light. We learned a lot about how to have such a sale for the next years. We can’t remember just how many of these, “Big Rummage Sales,” we had; but, we averaged about one thousand dollars each time. With those funds, we were able to purchase a much-needed camera and other items. One big ticket item we funded was a sound system for the meeting room at the library including a mic with mic stand and two speakers. It was well used for many years.

An early event we sponsored was a, “Senior Appreciation Day Luncheon,” in the meeting room. This annual event was usually at noon on a spring day sometime in April or May. We always had a good attendance for this event and, in addition to our catering the luncheon with our own time-honored recipes, we had some kind of entertainment. One time, a local young man currently serving as a state senator in the Capitol in Jackson, Mississippi, presented a musical program that was enjoyed by everyone. Senator Rob Smith had not yet become one of our Lifetime Members; but, he always supported the library and Richland Library in particular. Sadly, he passed away a little over a year ago and he has been much missed.
