Keep an eye out for these two Invasive Species on our local lakes...

Water hyacinth and water lettuce are currently Michigan Watch List species, but their regulatory status is changing this summer.

Effective June 19, 2026, both aquatic plants will be added to Michigan’s prohibited species list. After that date, it will be unlawful to introduce, import, sell, possess with intent to distribute, or intentionally propagate these species in Michigan.

Some CLMP volunteers may have handled and identified these plants during aquatic plant training at the MLSA conference earlier this month. Both are floating aquatic plants that can form dense mats and impact native plants, habitat, recreation, and water movement.

If you see water hyacinth or water lettuce outside of cultivation, report it to the EGLE Aquatic Invasive Species Program or through MISIN. https://www.michigan.gov/invasives

Some timely reading for residents and those who enjoy Gull Lake so much.

As we start to see more and more boats on the water and in the slips for the 2026 Gull Lake Season, let’s keep a few things in mind.

The no wake buoys are in place. Everything south of these buoys is no wake. Doesn’t matter who you are, what your last name is or who you work for on or off the lake! Be respectful.

Gull Lake has amazingly clear water, nothing ruins it like a beer can or trash in the lake. If you see trash floating grab it. Please don’t sink trash, cans or bottles.

The sand bar has and will always be a great place to have fun and relax. Read the room! If you bring glass bottles please transfer them into a plastic cup. Many people are barefoot and have stepped on glass over the years.

Music. Again, read the room. No one really has issues with respectable music at a respectable volume. Lyrics with kids and families around just be considerate.

The police and DNR enforcement will be present. They are there to help, as much as some disagree, they often would rather diffuse a situation peacefully then elevate it.

There are no new ordinances or no wake zones for this 2026 season that I am aware of.

The channel, please if you’re transiting down the channel, as many do, just be respectful and courteous. Act like you live here!

We are all here to have fun and relax. New people are always checking out the lake. They may not understand or know these things.

Lead by example!

Let’s have a great year, see everyone on the sandbar soon!
