Yesterday afternoon, Richland Fire & Emergency Services responded to a significant structure fire at a residence on Pullen Street. Initial reports indicated that occupants and animals may still have been inside, prompting an immediate response focused on life safety, fire suppression, and protecting neighboring homes. All human life was evacuated safely.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of firefighters, law enforcement, utility providers, and numerous partner agencies from across the region, crews were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to surrounding properties.

We would like to thank the Richland Police Department, Kennewick Fire Department, Pasco Fire Department, Benton County Fire Districts #1 and #4, Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Cascade Natural Gas, Benton PUD, Ben Franklin Transit, Garcia Brother Portable Toilets, the American Red Cross of Southeastern Washington, and many others who assisted throughout the incident.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation. At this time, investigators have not determined a cause, and damage estimates are not yet available.

The City shares the community's concern regarding the recent fire and its impacts. Since September 2025, the City has been actively pursuing enforcement actions to address conditions at the property through the legal process. As with all cases, the City is required to follow applicable state and federal laws, including due process requirements and laws governing requests for reasonable accommodation. These legal requirements can affect the timing and manner of enforcement actions. While we do not comment on ongoing legal matters, the City has worked tirelessly on this situation and has been working through the appropriate legal channels to achieve compliance. We remain committed to protecting public safety while respecting the legal rights afforded to all residents. Richland Fire & Emergency Services will take reasonable steps to secure the safety of the scene and the surrounding properties, and the City’s abatement effort will continue.

If you have information that may assist investigators, please contact Battalion Chief and Fire Marshal Andy Sabin at 509-942-7327 or [email protected].

We are grateful for the professionalism, teamwork, and community support demonstrated throughout this response. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

After more than 25 years of dedicated service, Richland Fire & Emergency Services recently said goodbye to one of the very best.

Chris Byrd was hired on January 29, 2001, and retired on May 23, 2026. Throughout his career, Chris served our community in many roles, including paramedic and Deputy Fire Marshal (now Assistant Fire Marshal), helping protect the people of Richland with professionalism, knowledge, and unwavering commitment.

But if you ask those who worked alongside Chris, they'll tell you that his greatest contribution wasn't a job title, but the person he is.

Chris is the kind of person who is always willing to help, whether you've known him for years or just met him yesterday. He's known for his kindness, generosity, positive attitude, and the songs that could often be heard echoing through the station. He has a way of making people feel welcome, supported, and valued, and he leaves a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to work with him.

The fire service is full of great firefighters, but great human beings are even harder to find. Chris is both.

Thank you, Chris, for your years of service, your friendship, your leadership, and the countless ways you've made this department better. We wish you nothing but happiness in retirement and hope you enjoy every minute spent making memories with those grandbabies.

Congratulations, Chris. You've earned it!

Yesterday we had the honor of unveiling the newest SaveStation at Badger Mountain Community Park, bringing an easy-to-use, voice-guided AED to one of the busiest parks in the area. In the event of a cardiac arrest, the SaveStation can be implemented to issue potentially lifesaving care before emergency response arrives. This is the seventh SaveStation in Richland.

The SaveStation can be located on the restroom facility building right next to the baseball fields.

To learn more about this initiative and find out where other AED's are located throughout our community, visit richlandwa.gov/SaveStation.

The Richland Firefighter Stairclimb Team had a fantastic time on Sunday raising money in the fight to end blood cancer! We loved spending time with our community and are so grateful to the wonderful team at Yokes for making us feel so welcome.

Together, we raised just under $2,000 and we climbed an incredible 787 stories in the process!

If you didn't get a chance to stop by but would still like to support the cause, visit Blood Cancer United and search for the Firefighter Stairclimb, Team Richland Fire & EMS.

Thank you again for all your generous support and wish us luck on March 8th for the stairclimb at the Columbia Tower in Seattle!

Richland Fire & Emergency Services is taking a major step forward in emergency medical care by launching a pre-hospital blood transfusion program, an advanced life-saving capability designed to deliver blood products to critically ill patients before they arrive at the hospital.

Medical evidence is clear: the faster a patient receives blood following critical illness or traumatic injury, the greater their chance of survival. Studies show that each minute of delay in access to blood can increase the odds of mortality by as much as five percent. Pre-hospital blood transfusion programs have been endorsed by leading national organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, American College of Emergency Physicians, International Association of EMS Chiefs, and the National Association of EMS Physicians.

With this initiative, the City of Richland aims to become the first fire and EMS agency in Eastern Washington to carry blood onboard emergency response units, placing life-saving care closer to patients when every second matters.

“This program represents a significant advancement in trauma care for our community and region,” said Richland Fire & Emergency Services Chief Randy Aust. “By bringing blood directly to patients in the field, we can stabilize critical injuries sooner and improve outcomes during the most crucial moments of care.”

To support the launch of the program and build regional awareness around the importance of blood donation, the City of Richland Fire & Emergency Services is partnering with the American Red Cross Northwest Region to host a large regional blood drive.

Regional Blood Drive Details
• Date: Tuesday, March 31, 2026
• Time: 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
• Location: Fire Station 74, 2710 Duportail St., Richland
• Goal: 150 blood donations, with hopes of the largest single-day blood drive turnout in Washington State

Community members who register and donate will receive:
• A $15 Amazon gift card
• A free commemorative t-shirt
• A complimentary A1C test, which can help screen for diabetes

Blood collected through this effort will help strengthen regional blood supplies while supporting the long-term sustainability of pre-hospital blood programs in Washington State.

Pre-hospital blood transfusion programs are expanding statewide, with early adoption by agencies in Western Washington. However, fewer than one percent of EMS agencies nationwide currently carry blood despite its proven ability to prevent deaths from traumatic blood loss. The City of Richland’s initiative reflects a growing commitment to innovation, preparedness, and regional leadership in emergency medical services.

Community members are encouraged to register in advance to secure an appointment.
Register today to donate and help save lives. Visit Richlandwa.gov/BloodOnBoard or call 1-800-733-2767.
