Life jackets are important! Hewitt and Holcomb Parks have 4 life jacket kiosks that have all sizes of life jackets you can borrow. Our motto: Get into it!

As we conclude National Safe Boating Week, hopefully, you get the gist that life jackets are the single most important piece of equipment for recreational boating. It's not just about safety. It's about building positive memories with friends and family. Being a role model and encouraging others who are enjoying water recreation to wear one. What's the downside?

Accidents happen. Your chances of surviving them go WAY UP when wearing a life jacket. It buys you time, keeps your core warm, lifts your head above the water, and is designed with boating activities in mind.

On behalf of the Oregon State Marine Board, we wish everyone a wonderful (and safe!) Memorial Day Weekend.

In late March this year, the Ashland boat inspection station staff inspected the first confirmed boat carrying invasive mussels into Oregon and performed a full boat decontamination. This first line of defense works, but we know we need to do more.

ODFW has plans to increase its staffing levels statewide, thanks to legislative actions in the 2025 session for both the Marine Board and ODFW. Other legislation now allows other entities to be trained by ODFW for their own inspection stations, further protecting high-risk waterbodies that are used not only for recreation, but also as local water sources, irrigation, or hydropower.

With the temperatures starting to creep up, more boaters are making their way to the water. If you're a paddler, your paddle is one of the best communication tools for other boaters! These are the most common signals to communicate your intentions. The next method jumps to a sound-producing device, like a whistle.

Play it safe out there!

Thanks to the Nautical Safety Board, Hewitt and Holcomb Parks started our loaner life vest kiosks three years ago. We could not have done it without their help.
We continue to provide loaner life vests at four stations in the Parks to keep boaters safe and save lives.
If you have extra or outgrown life vests, please share them with the Parks or donate to purchase new ones. You'll be helping to save lives.
