asslands, and 222 research and experimental forests, as well as other special areas, covering more than 192 million acres of public land. The Forest Service has evolved into a 30,000 employee agency that manages the national forests for a number of multiple uses, including recreation, timber, wilderness, minerals, water, grazing, fish, and wildlife. The Fishlake National Forest located in south-central Utah, encompasses 1.5 million acres in Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Juab, Millard, Piute, Sanpete, Sevier and Wayne Counties. The Forest features majestic stands of aspen encircling open mountain meadows that are lush with a diverse community of forbs and grasses. Fish Lake, from which the forest takes its name, is considered by many to be the gem of Utah. The largest natural mountain lake in the state, it offers trophy fishing and bird watching. The mountains of the Fishlake are a source of water for many of the neighboring communities and agricultural valleys in the region. Hunting, fishing and OHV use are among the most popular forms of recreation enjoyed by forest visitors. There are four ranger districts on the Forest; Beaver, in Beaver; Fillmore, in Fillmore; Fremont River in Loa; and Richfield. The Supervisor’s Office is collocated with the Richfield Ranger District in Richfield.

East Salina Prescribed Fire Update

This past March, the Richfield Ranger District successfully completed about 12,500 acres of prescribed burning east of Salina, Utah. 🌲✨ Since then, fire personnel have been closely monitoring the area.

✅ No smoke has been seen in the Moroni Peak area for nearly six weeks
🔎 Minimal smoke has been observed in the Duncan Mountain area
🚁 Infrared drones are being flown to check for any remaining heat

Prescribed fire continues to be one of our most effective tools for improving forest health and reducing hazardous fuels. This spring’s treatment cost about $38 per acre, compared to $1,471 per acre during last year’s Monroe Canyon Fire — a savings of roughly $1,433 per acre! 💰🌿

📊 Check out the chart below to see the cost comparison between last year’s Monroe Canyon Fire and this year’s East Salina prescribed burn. The difference is significant — and it highlights why proactive, planned burning is such a valuable tool for forest health and community safety.

If weather allows, the Richfield Ranger District plans to continue proactive forest management with additional prescribed burns this fall and into next year. These efforts support healthier forests, reduced wildfire risk, and improved wildlife habitat. 🦌🌾

Recent Road and Infrastructure Work on the Fishlake National Forest

📸 Check out these before and after photos ! Our road crew has been hard at work improving roads, restoring access, and strengthening infrastructure across the forest. We wanted to share a quick update on what’s been happening out there.

🚧 Wades Canyon Road (FR 516) – Beaver District
About five miles of road received maintenance using milling and rock crushing equipment. The goal was to smooth out rough spots and improve travel conditions.

🛤️ South Meadow Creek – Fillmore District
After the Halfway Hill Fire damaged the old timber bridge, a new 9 foot corrugated metal pipe was installed to reopen the route.

🚜 Tantalus Flat Road – Fremont River District
Crews replaced two failed cattle guards and improved nearby sections of road.

🌲🔥Nearly 9 out of 10 wildfires are caused by people — and during drought, the land becomes even more vulnerable. Dry grasses, leaves, and branches can ignite from the smallest spark.

We all need to do our part to prevent wildfires:
• 💧 Put out campfires completely — drown, stir, and feel until cold.
• 🔗 Secure trailer chains — dragging metal can spark roadside fires.
• ❌ Avoid burning on windy or dry days.
• 🚗 Check vehicles & equipment — hot exhaust and engines can ignite dry vegetation.
• 🚭 Dispose of ci******es properly — never toss them on the ground.
• 💥 Use spark arrestors on chainsaws and OHVs.

Drought means the forest needs your help more than ever.

Only you can prevent wildfires. 🐻

Directions: Travel west of Koosharem on FS076 for 5.8 miles, then NW on FS068 for 1.8 miles, turn west toward Koosharem Guard Station, travel west then south on FS081 for 1.5 miles, then right onto TR103 to the trailhead.

Good news, you can now purchase firewood permits for the Fishlake National Forest through our new online E-Permit system: https://epermits.fs2c.usda.gov/forest/0408

✅Permits may be purchased by computer or mobile device.
✅You can still purchase firewood permits in-person at our offices.
✅If you purchase a permit online, you must print out your permit and load tag and have it with you when gathering wood.

The is currently at 95% containment and 7,025 acres this morning.

The fire area recieved moisture (a mix of rain and snow) over the weekend. This helps cool hot spots on the fire. But it also slows progress on containment. An area will only be called "contained" when ground crews are able to walk the perimeter of the fire and assure the area has no possibility of growth along that portion. With the moisture comes conditions unsafe to place crews hiking the areas to determine containment. While they remain on scene patrolling, they'll re-engage when safe to do so.

Therefore, expect the remaining containment to be slow. Fire managers don't anticipate any growth, as the perimeter hasn't seen movement in multiple shifts. But the test will be when the weather warms up to assure that the remaining uncontained perimeter holds and crews can ground truth it. Firefighters appreciate the public's support and patience with the process through these weather conditions.

The is now 90% contained, remaining at 7,025 acres. The area is currently receiving precipitation, which will help cool remaining pockets of heat. Firefighters remain on scene, and will engage suppression efforts when safe to do so.

Due to the progress, management of the fire is being transferred back to local unit from the Type 4 team. Crews will remain on scene until full containment is reached.
