A brief history about the Madonna of the trail. Located along Rt. 40 between Richeyville and Beallsville.
This weekend, along the National Rd. (Rt. 40), is the National Road Festival! For those not familiar with this festival, it's a festival that began in 1976 as a celebration of the American Bicentennial. The initial celebration and festival started at a site in Brownsville, PA along the National Pike, now known today as the National Pike Steam, Gas, and Horse Association (I have many photos of this festival I'll be posting in the coming days). It was such a big hit, that it has continued ever since, and many people that live along or near the National Rd. have embraced the traffic of people that come to see this festival by doing yardsales and garage sales.
Now, to explain the meaning behind this shot, here's a bit more history about the National Road (Rt. 40). Scattered along the original layout of the National Road, are 12 of the same statues, each called "Madonna of the Trail", located in Bethesda, MD, Beallsville, PA, Wheeling, WV, Springfield, OH, Richmond, IN, Vandalia, IL, Lexington, MO, Council Grove, KS, Lamar, CO, Albuquergue, NM, Springerville, AZ, and Upland, CA. The shot that I took here is the one in Beallsville, PA. These statues were erected to honor the strength of the pioneer women that traveled with their children and families many years ago.
This shot here is a four image panorama I took at sunrise on Friday morning, although the best color of the morning didn't materialize much later that morning, so there wasn't near the color in the sky that I was hoping for, so I made this composition a black and white one. I have several more great shots from Friday morning that I'll also be sharing with you all in the coming days. Although this isn't exactly how I had planned to edit the composition I was going for yesterday morning, I'm very happy with how this black and white compostion turned out. Enjoy!
