Small business hiring is losing steam. Employers added just 29,500 jobs in August, below the 12-month average of 41,700, and pay growth slowed to 3.9%, per new Gusto data.

Nationally, job openings ticked up to 7.3 million in July, but white collar postings fell sharply, from 1.473 million in April to 1.138 million. July's jobs report showed a surprise loss of 23,000 jobs, and economists expect only modest gains, around 50,000, when Friday's August numbers land. Inflation, meanwhile, is still running at 3.4%, well above the Fed's 2% target, with some analysts expecting a September rate hike.

Did you know the Supreme Court hasn't always had nine justices? Congress has changed its size six times since 1789, from six seats, up to ten, before settling on nine in 1869.

Nine isn't in the Constitution. Congress sets the number by ordinary law, which is exactly why it keeps coming up in Washington. Right now, some lawmakers want to lock the number in for good with a constitutional amendment. Others argue the Court should be expanded.

The House voted 370-48 this week to keep the federal government funded through December 11, avoiding a shutdown just weeks before the September 30 deadline. The Senate had already passed it 90-6.

For small businesses, it means SBA loan processing, federal contracts, and other agency services keep running, at least until the next deadline. The bigger budget fight is delayed until after the midterms.

The House Rules Committee just advanced a resolution condemning socialism and calling for stricter voter citizenship checks. It denounces socialism and the DSA, reaffirms the Constitution, and calls for the SAVE America Act's proof-of-citizenship and photo ID requirements. Supporters say socialism has repeatedly led to economic collapse and that citizenship checks protect election integrity. Opponents call it political messaging that could disenfranchise eligible voters and oversteps states' authority over elections.

Inflation's monthly pace slowed to 0.1% in July, but prices are still up 3.4% over the past year, and small businesses are still paying more. Beef and fuel costs remain elevated, and retail sales just posted their first monthly drop in months.

Families are feeling it too. Wages are growing more slowly than prices again, gas is still nearly 25% higher than a year ago, and groceries remain up despite the monthly dip.

Interesting to note that lower-income households spent more in July while higher-income households pulled back, reversing a pattern that had held for years.

A reporting rule that could have cost small businesses up to $591 a day in penalties just disappeared.

Treasury ended the Corporate Transparency Act's mandatory ownership reporting rule for U.S. companies. It's real relief, but it came from an agency rule, not a law, so a future administration could bring it back. That's why H.R. 425 and S. 100 are pending in Congress to permanently repeal the requirement.

Supporters, including Treasury Secretary Bessent, call it overdue relief from a costly mandate. Opponents, including Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), a bipartisan pair, say the rollback undermines a law meant to detect money laundering and shell-company abuse.
