Melanie Diaz was 25 years old when she passed away in a high-rise apartment fire in February 2023. The building had fire sprinklers only in the garage. No working smoke alarms. No emergency lighting.

In the years since, her family has channeled unimaginable grief into a mission to ensure no other family experiences the same loss. The Diaz family will receive AFSA's 2026 Fire Sprinkler Advocate of the Year Award at AFSA45 this September in San Antonio.
