If you’re planning a trip to the St. Peter's Dome and Morgan Falls Recreation Area this fall you may see some construction equipment! We are excited to partner with Trout Unlimited to improve the trailhead parking area and the St. Peter’s Dome trail.

The St. Peter’s Dome trail has experienced erosion, and the project will rehabilitate the trail by placing rocks, resurfacing, and creating short trail re-routes. The project will also convert the trailhead parking lot island to a low maintenance picnic area. This includes eliminating grass and weeds, adding topsoil, planting native plants, shrubs, and trees, and installing gravel trails and picnic table pads.

The trail will remain open during construction, but hikers may encounter active trail work, staged equipment, and construction traffic around the trailhead.

Northern Wisconsin is under drought conditions and fire danger is elevated across the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, with several new wildfire starts that wildland firefighters are responding to across the state. Yesterday, 174 new fires were reported nationwide, including 12 new large fires. Firefighters are currently working to contain 86 large fires, with 22,085 firefighters and support personnel assigned to incidents nationwide.

Extreme fire behavior is reported in multiple geographic areas. While the Northwest continues to see the most extensive fire activity, six new large incidents were reported in the Southern Geographic Area yesterday, highlighting the way that regional fire activity can shift and is often tied to weather events. Today, we honor the dedicated members of the wildland firefighting community who protect our communities and natural resources from wildfires. Their courage, dedication and sacrifice are remarkable.

Wildland firefighters and support personnel serve in many different roles, in every corner of the country, but they are united by a common purpose: protecting lives, communities, and natural resources.

On this National Wildland Firefighter Day, we recognize the professionalism, dedication, and courage of the entire wildland fire community.

We also pause to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and remember the families, friends, and coworkers who carry that loss forward.

Today is a day of recognition, reflection, and gratitude.

Today marks the beginning of the Week of Remembrance—a time to honor the wildland firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and to reflect on the lessons their stories continue to teach us.

This year's Week of Remembrance focuses on serious incidents from the 2016 fire season, encouraging all of us to learn from the past while recognizing the lasting impact these events have had on our wildland fire community.

As we begin this week of reflection, our hearts are especially heavy following the tragic loss of three wildland firefighters this weekend during initial attack operations on the Knowles Fire. We mourn alongside their families, friends, crewmates, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss.

Today is also observed in honor of the 15 firefighters lost during the 2016 fire season and in lasting remembrance of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, whose sacrifice on June 30, 2013, will never be forgotten.

We invite you to join us and the National Wildfire Coordinating Group throughout the week as we remember those we've lost, reflect on the lessons learned, and recommit ourselves to looking out for one another.
