🔥 Don’t Burn and Turn 🔥
Madison Fire Department is currently responding to a large number of out-of-control controlled burns across the county.
“Don’t Burn and Turn” is a safety campaign reminding residents to never leave a controlled burn unattended. If you light it, you stay with it—ensuring it remains safe, contained, and fully extinguished before you walk away.
Here’s what’s causing these fires:
• Not registering your burns, which means Madison Fire Department and Madison County Dispatch are unaware of them and who to contact in case of issues
• Burning during windy conditions
• Leaving burns unattended
• Not fully extinguishing fires
• Burning piles that are too large
Spring winds — especially in the afternoon — can carry embers long distances into brush, trees, and even structures. We recently had a controlled burn spread and catch an abandoned house on fire.
Right now, our crews are racing all over the county putting out fires. We are consistently having to empty stations and call in off-duty personnel, and request mutual-aid from neighboring counties’ fire departments – all of which delays responses to medical calls, car accidents, and other fires.
If you are going to burn, please:
âś” Register your burn
âś” Burn small piles
âś” Watch the wind
âś” Stay with your fire
âś” Make sure it is cold to the touch before you leave
