City of Rexburg

City of Rexburg We serve the community of Rexburg, Idaho. View social media policy: https://www.rexburg.org/page/social-media Ricks, to settle the Upper Snake River Valley. St.

The city of Rexburg was founded in March 1883 when an intrepid group of pioneers decided to settle along the banks of the Teton River. They had been sent by church leaders in Salt Lake City, under the direction of Thomas E. The new community, named Rexburg after their leader (Ricks being German for Rex or King) quickly attracted men and women eager to bring industry and civilization to the West. B

y the time Idaho entered the Union as the 43rd state in 1890, Rexburg was the second largest city in the state. The city fathers recognized education and commerce as essential ingredients to building a strong, family centered community. Before the end of their first year in the valley, while setting out to cultivate and irrigate the semiarid land, the city fathers found time to organize Bannock Stake Academy the first primary school in the area. In 1888, just five years after its initial settlement, civic and church leaders founded Ricks Academy, eventually becoming Ricks College (the largest private junior college in the US) and later (2001) Brigham Young University-Idaho, a four year liberal arts college. Brigham Young University-Idaho is one of the fastest growing universities in the entire country. It attracts talented students from around the world to study, and this diversity adds to Rexburg’s culture. The University’s unique three-track system allows more students to attend the University while Rexburg benefits from the yearlong presence of the students. Student population for each track is nearing 15,000 a semester. In addition to higher education, Rexburg boasts excellent elementary and high schools. Madison High School recently moved to brand new facilities; two new elementary schools Burton, and South Fork Elementaries have increased total student capacity for Rexburg by 800 students. With a student to teacher ratio of 15:1 Rexburg is an ideal location to raise a family. Set within an hours drive of two major National Parks, Yellowstone and Teton, Rexburg’s fishing, hunting, camping and outdoor recreation activities are year round. Anthony Sand dues are a nationally recognized, year round destination for off road enthusiasts. As Rexburg enters the second decade of the twenty first century it is uniquely placed to take advantage of its location, people and limitless potential. Its location near interstate 15 and US Highways 20 and 33 make it a gateway to Jackson Hole, WY; Butte, MT; Sun Valley Idaho; and communities in between. Its educated workforce is willing and able to meet the expectations and challenges of an increasingly globalized marketplace.

Message from the Idaho Transportation Department

“Indeed, we're about to create a smoother ride down Main Street! 😎 Thanks to our contractor partners and friends at the City of Rexburg for helping get the word out! This project will be done at night to keep traffic moving as normal through the day, but some daytime work on curbing and manhole covers will be happening next week. The City's cool infrastructure map could be helpful for finding off-street parking and knowing what's happening where: https://www.rexburg.org/o/cor/page/featured-construction-updates

As for the Fourth of July, we refuse to be the reason you can't carry on with celebrations as usual!😅 All work will be paused and traffic control out of the way July 2-5. The project is expected to be complete by early August. THANK YOU, Rexburg for your patience as the road gets better!😊 More info here: https://itd.idaho.gov/news/resurfacing-to-begin-monday-on-sh-33-business-spur-in-rexburg/”

ITD has informed us that daytime work is slated to begin this Monday (June 15) will shift to nighttime construction later in the project.

An excellent explanation to a question we see frequently.
City/County services are confusing, we know. This explanation extends across the line for many City/County services. If you have other questions, please let us know!

What is the difference between the city Police Department and the county Sheriff's Office?

We frequently deal with confused residents who don't know what jurisdiction they live in. If your address says Sugar City, Saint Anthony, or Rigby, you definitely don't live in the City of Rexburg. But it does get a little less obvious in other unincorporated parts of Madison County.

Not every mailing address that has Rexburg listed as the city is in the City of Rexburg. Living in the City of Rexburg means you pay City taxes, vote in City elections, and receive other City services (with a few niche exceptions). If this is you, this means the Rexburg Police Department is responsible for responding to your calls for service and conducting those investigations.

The Sheriff's Office serves the entire county, but primarily responds to calls in Madison County outside Rexburg city limits. Since Rexburg is the county seat, the Sheriff's Office is located in the city. This means you will frequently see deputies in town, and they still have jurisdiction to make traffic stops and enforce the law as necessary. They also provide jail and dispatch services, which is why all 911 calls are answered by Madison Dispatch and all arrestees are transported to the Madison County Jail.

That being said, we work closely together on investigations. You will frequently see officers and deputies on scenes working side by side when investigations require more resources, or when another agency can get on scene faster. In a life-or-death situation, emergency responders will get on scene as fast as they can, whether it is a city officer, a county deputy, or a state trooper.

The exact moment the dam broke.
They say the waters came in with a roar. A large brown line that drew closer and closer.
When it hit Rexburg - 15 miles away - it was a little after 2 pm.
There was no notice. There was no time to prepare.

Exactly 50 years from the moment of this post.

🚛” THIS IS NOT OKAY!” 🚛
As you tackle lawn care and yard projects this season, please remember that grass clippings, leaves, branches, and other yard waste should not be placed in City sanitation containers. While it may seem harmless, it’s a big safety risk for our crews.

Yard debris has caused literal trash fires in our sanitation trucks. It also damages equipment and can lead to delayed service.
Please compost yard waste at home or take it to the Madison County Transfer Station at the end of Airport Road. Some private yard service companies also offer debris pickup services as an alternative solution.

Safety is one of our top priorities for both our community and our employees.
We appreciate your help in keeping sanitation services running smoothly. Thank you for doing your part to keep Rexburg safe and clean!

NOTE: No actual sanitation trucks were harmed in the making of this image. 🖥️
