Have you ever seen an avalanche in Madison County?

Think there’s no avalanche risk in our own backyard? Think again. ⚠

This past week, two of our Sheriffs dupty and three of our dedicated volunteers completed their AIARE Level 1 avalanche training. This isn’t just a quick seminar it’s a rigorous 24-hour course consisting of online prep, classroom discussions, and two full days of intensive fieldwork "on the hill."

The most eye-opening part? We spent the entire field portion of the class right here in Madison County. During the training, our team identified several high-risk zones that many people recreate in every day without realizing the potential danger.

Being able to pinpoint these hazards within county lines is a game-changer for our team's readiness. Knowing the terrain is the first step in saving lives.
Check out the video to see our crew in action during our two days on the hill! ❄đŸ’Ș

(They left a “nice” note!) Our team was out yesterday getting some essential training hours in! With the little bit of snow we've had, we officially swapped over to tracks and headed up to ensure everything is in top working order. We need to be 100% ready when that emergency call comes in.

We were the very first trailer in the parking lot, the only other soul there was a brave individual taking a nap in the bed of his truck (definitely cold, but totally legal!).

Throughout the day, it was awesome to stop and chat with so many of you out enjoying the trails on snowmobiles, four-wheelers, and even a dirt bike.

However, we returned to a bit of a surprise. We found a "very nice" note left on our truck. It seems someone wasn't happy with how we parked, despite us being the first ones with a trailer. While the note used some "colorful" language to tell us, they think we parked wrong, we’d like to offer a different suggestion for next time.

If you’re the person who wrote this note: the next time you see a Sheriff’s Deputy, maybe skip the pen and paper and buy them a soda or a donut instead. đŸ©đŸ„€

Parking lots can get tight, vehicles move, and the direction people park ïżŒchanges, but leaving a rude note on anyone’s vehicle is never the best thing to do.

Let's keep the trails (and the parking lots) friendly! Be safe out there and remember, we are here to help when you need us.

Request for Comments - Sheriff’s Office Applying for State Grant Funds

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is applying for grant funding to replace aging off-highway and winter response equipment, including snowmachines and four-wheelers (ATVs), and to add snow bikes and an equipment trailer to enhance patrol and search and rescue capabilities. Much of the existing equipment has exceeded its service life and is increasingly unreliable, resulting in higher maintenance costs and reduced operational readiness.

Madison County includes rural, mountainous, and backcountry terrain that is often inaccessible to standard patrol vehicles. The replacement and addition of this equipment, along with a trailer to safely transport and deploy it, will improve response capability, reliability, and officer safety during both summer and winter operations.
Public comments regarding this application are welcome. For more information, please contact Deputy Burton at [email protected].
