Yesterday, I was honored to present the 2026 Martin Luther King Service Award for District 5 to Gwen Allen-Carston, Executive Director of the Kent Black Action Commission.

For more than 15 years, Gwen has brought South King County together through Kent’s Juneteenth celebration while also helping countless residents engage in civic life through voter outreach, youth initiatives, community conversations, and leadership development.

Most recently, Gwen helped lead the successful effort to establish MLK Memorial Way signage along SR 900 and SR 515, symbolically extending Seattle’s Martin Luther King Jr. Way into Renton and Kent and creating a lasting tribute to Dr. King’s legacy.

I had the privilege of attending the unveiling celebration last week, and seeing Gwen’s joy after years of advocacy was a powerful reminder that meaningful change happens because dedicated people refuse to give up.

Gwen’s leadership has strengthened our communities, elevated voices, and inspired others to serve. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for everything you do for South King County.

I invite you to watch this short clip shown at council to learn more about her story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8k3PPApxbrY

Today, the Sound Transit Board approved an updated Sound Transit 3 Plan that advances key transit investments while aligning projects with the agency’s financial capacity.

I’m pleased the final package includes my co-sponsored amendments to:

✅ Fully fund the Renton Transit Center parking garage by reallocating existing parking project funds
✅ Improve transit access in North Tukwila while design planning for the Boeing Access Road Station continues
✅ Begin negotiations for midday Sounder service

Thank you to my colleagues and local leaders across the region who helped advance these priorities.

Today’s vote is meaningful progress for South King County riders, and I remain committed to delivering on the promises voters made through ST3 and build a stronger, more connected regional transportation system.

On a rainy Memorial Day afternoon, it was wonderful to join the annual ceremony at Renton's Veterans Memorial Park with Moxon. He was especially honored to help present the Space Force wreath during the ceremony.

Thank you to VFW #1263 and the City of Renton, WA -- Government for organizing such a meaningful event to remember and honor the service members who gave their lives for our country.

Back home after several productive days in Washington, D.C., where I joined my fellow King County Councilmembers in meeting with our Congressional delegation to advocate for priorities impacting our region.

We focused on protecting access to healthcare, behavioral health treatment, and food assistance programs; supporting public safety, youth workforce development, and vote-by-mail elections; strengthening transportation, housing, and wastewater infrastructure investments; and ensuring King County has the federal partnership and resources needed to meet our growing community needs.

I also emphasized the need for stronger flood prevention and coordination, with the Army Corps of Engineers, particularly around Howard Hanson Dam operations and its downstream flood impacts in the Kent Valley and South King County.

I appreciated our delegation’s engagement on these issues and look forward to our continued work together on behalf of King County residents.

Today, the Sound Transit Board discussed the Chair’s proposal to address ST3’s $34.5B funding gap while continuing to move major transit projects forward. Under the Chair’s proposal, projects including West Seattle, Tacoma Dome, Everett, the T Line to Tacoma Community College, and South Kirkland to Issaquah, would move forward with full funding. Other projects would require additional future resources before construction can begin.

NO voter-approved projects are being canceled, and this was just the first discussion of many as the Board works toward a decision later this month. Thank you to the hundreds of people who showed up, submitted comments, and continue to stay engaged in these conversations.

Please join us on May 13 at Highline College (Building 2) for our South King County Sound Transit Forum with King County Executive Girmay Zahilay, Tukwila Mayor Thomas McLeod, Sound Transit, and Transportation Choices Coalition to talk about the future of ST3 and answer community questions. And yes… apparently coordinated outfits with Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda and Tacoma City Councilmember Kristina Walker were on today’s Board agenda too!

Yesterday, Council unanimously passed a motion I co-sponsored with Councilmembers Barón and Dembowski to strengthen oversight of the King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA). Our legislation ensures that we get a clear understanding of KCRHA’s financial position while establishing a strong framework and timeline for the path forward.

The recent audit raised serious concerns, and we must respond with accountability and transparency while maintaining continuity for the people, organizations, and workers who rely on these services every day.

Just as important, whatever comes next must deliver stronger results and better outcomes than what we have today.

This is about making informed, responsible decisions and ensuring our homelessness response system works better for the people who depend on it most.
