As Telecommunicator Appreciation Week comes to a close…
we didn’t forget about our dispatchers today.

They just kept us a little busy.

Over the last two days, they’ve carried us through severe weather,
widespread power outages, limited technology and communications,
increased call volume, road closures, the normal day-to-day emergencies…

…and then some.

Three serious crashes.
A mass casualty train incident with numerous responding agencies.
Everything in between.
Those are just the things WE know about and we are sure they answered at least a dozen “when is the power coming back on?” phone calls coming in at the worse possible moments.

Let’s just say—being a dispatcher isn’t easy.

While we wish we could have spent this week delivering gift bags, baked goods, and all the well-deserved recognition… they’ve been doing what they always do—

Answering the next call and telling us where to go.

We hope they know how much they are appreciated—not just this week, but every day.

And especially for the incredible job they’ve done over the last 48 hours!!

911 dispatchers don’t take breaks between calls.

The call before yours may have been someone’s worst moment—
and the next one is already coming in.

But what most people don’t see is what happens after the call ends.

Dispatchers don’t always get closure.
They rarely know the outcome.
And the weight of each call doesn’t just disappear—it stacks up.

Even after hanging up, their work continues:
• Monitoring crews in real time
• Following the call through to completion
• Updating and documenting critical information
• Preparing for the next call—immediately

They carry the voices, the urgency, and the unknown outcomes with them… all while continuing to show up for the next person who needs help.

Every call. Every time.

Behind every 9-1-1 call is a highly trained telecommunicator—using every tool available to get you help.

Real-time translation services and Text-to-911 are just a few of the many resources available to support them in that mission.

These tools aren’t just for language barriers.
They’re also critical when:
• You can’t speak safely
• You’re unable to communicate verbally
• The situation requires silent communication

No matter the circumstance, dispatchers are prepared to adapt—using technology, training, and experience to connect with you and get help moving.

It’s all part of ensuring help reaches you—no matter how you’re able to ask for it.

Dispatchers are expert multitaskers.

While they are asking you questions, they are also:
• Sending help
• Entering information into our Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system
• Updating responding crews in real time

All at the same time.

Those questions aren’t slowing things down — they’re part of how they manage everything at once and get you the help you need.

The best thing you can do?
Answer clearly and stay with on the phone with them.

Dispatchers aren’t just answering the phone — they’re actively working to help you.

They are trained to:
• Ask critical questions
• Follow Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) protocols
• Give life-saving instructions before EMS arrives

That can mean:
➡️ Starting CPR
➡️ Giving aspirin for chest pain
➡️ Controlling bleeding

Every question has a purpose.

When callers don’t answer — or ask more questions instead of responding — it delays those instructions.

Clear answers = faster help.

Telecommunicator Appreciation Week.

All week, we will be sharing messages of what (we think 🫣) dispatchers wish every caller knew — the real, behind-the-scenes things that help them help you when it matters most.

Not only because it makes their job easier…
…but because it could make a difference on your worst day.

Dispatchers - feel free to contribute and correct us as we go.

Day 1 is simple — but important.

🌟 📱 🚑 📞🚒 ☎️ 🚓 🌟

Every emergency starts with a voice.

Before the sirens, before we arrive — someone answers the call.

This week, we recognize the telecommunicators of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and Rensselaer Police Department — the calm behind the chaos, the steady voice guiding every response.

You are the first first responders.
And your impact is felt on every call we take.

Thank you for everything you do.
