Ever heard of bias in AI? AI tools are getting better at detecting skin cancer, but that progress isn’t benefiting everyone equally.

Research shows these tools can be significantly less accurate on darker skin tones, in part because the images used to train them overwhelmingly feature lighter skin. More representative data will be critical to making AI-assisted skin cancer detection safer and more effective for everyone.

Melanoma and other skin conditions can look different in people with darker versus lighter skin – but image databases include many more examples from people with lighter skin.

It’s back-to-school season … and we’ve got some new faces, too! 🎒

No backpacks required. No pop quizzes. No permission slips.

But there ARE new names to learn, new roles to explore and plenty of opportunities to make an impact. Think of it as the first day of school — just with fewer pencils and a lot more coffee. ☕

Our newest team members are getting settled in, learning the ropes and bringing fresh ideas to the organization. So sharpen those pencils — or, more realistically, open that laptop — and help us welcome the newest members of our team!

Class is officially in session. 🍎

Have you heard? NCC for the first time has a team member dedicated to leading our Sun Smart Nevada initiative! Alexis joined our team last month and is the captain of our sun safety hype squad. She'll be working with schools to ensure students can learn how to protect their skin, and work across the state to build sun smart communities.

Welcome Alexis!

See something funky on your skin? Get it checked.

A lot of skin conditions can look like a lot of other skin conditions to the untrained eye. Sometimes a biopsy is needed to determine exactly what that is. What's certain, though, is it's better to see a doctor and get it checked than let something linger into late stage cancer.

Don't be alarmed, don't be embarrassed. Be proactive about your health.

Both men and women can get EMPD, and it’s often mistaken for a benign rash, such as eczema. Here are the signs to know.
