Being our only gift shop resident means that Misha, one of our green iguanas here at the Ark, is privy to lots of important event planning meetings. She's especially excited to see everyone out at the Ark for our 3rd Annual Summer Festival on June 13 from 10am-3pm and wants to make sure that everyone knows that there are only 16 days left until this exciting event! Be sure to snag your tickets online, or come visit Misha at the Ark on June 13 to purchase tickets in person! This event will feature lots of amazing local vendors, delicious food trucks, and the opportunity to visit all our resident animals - including Misha, of course - all while supporting the conservation and care work that Animal Ark does. Did you know that tarantulas, and spiders in general, don’t have bones? Instead, they protect themselves with their hard outer layer, called the exoskeleton. In order to grow, tarantulas perform what is called a molt, where they shed their exoskeleton. When the spider is young, it may molt every month. As the tarantula ages, this will slow down and there may be years between molts. In this photo, our resident desert tarantula, Dolly, can be seen a few weeks after molting. After the molt, Dolly tends to be darker in color, slowly fading to a light brown over time.

Come meet Dolly the desert tarantula at Invertebrate Day on June 20th, where you can learn all about the bugs, arachnids, and more that call Nevada home!

Did you know Eastern Screech Owls are cavity nesters? This means they lay their eggs in enclosed spaces such as holes in trees or man-made structures like nest boxes. However, they can’t hollow out tree cavities themselves, typically relying on abandoned cavities, drilled out by woodpeckers or squirrels. While Archimedes, our Eastern Screech Owl here at Animal Ark, doesn't nest, you can often find him hanging out within his covered perch, mimicking the enclosed spaces he would frequent in the wild.
