The Reno Fire Department, in partnership with State Farm and Waste Management of Northern Nevada, is hosting a FREE Green Waste Dump Day at Horseman's Park (2800 Pioneer Drive).

Bring leaves, brush, small branches, and other yard vegetation to dispose of at no cost while helping reduce wildfire fuels around your property.

When it comes to creating defensible space, wildfire preparedness starts at home, and that includes fire stations, too!

Fire Station 14 in Somersett recently completed brush removal and tree trimming around the station to help reduce wildfire risk and improve defensible space. The work took place alongside broader wildfire mitigation efforts happening throughout the community, including vegetation management projects supported by the Somersett Homeowners Association and Green waste disposal happening this weekend at Horseman's Park! (more info to come)

Creating defensible space doesn't have to be complicated. A few simple steps can make a big difference:

- Remove dead vegetation, leaves, and pine needles around your home in a 5ft radius
- Trim tree branches away from roofs and chimneys
- Keep grass mowed and well-maintained
- Space shrubs and other vegetation to reduce fire spread
- Move combustible materials, such as firewood, away from structures

Wildfire preparedness is a shared responsibility, and every property that becomes more resilient helps strengthen the entire community!

Today was the ceremonial push-in for a new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting vehicle (ARFF) at Station 15 at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport!

Replacing a 20-year-old apparatus, the new ARFF brings enhanced aircraft emergency response capabilities, PFAS-free firefighting foam technology, and the tools firefighters need to help keep passengers, airport personnel, and our region safe.

This vehicle was made possible through a $911,140 Federal Aviation Administration grant secured by Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen, Congressman Mark Amodei, and nearly $214,000 in funding from the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority.

*Warning: The following footage is from a planned emergency response drill conducted for training and educational purposes. No one was actually in danger.*

The Reno Fire Department recently joined regional partners during a full-scale emergency exercise at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport designed to test how agencies respond during a major incident.

These drills allow first responders to train for large emergencies by practicing communication, coordination, rescues, hazardous materials response, and medical response in real-time conditions.

Training like this helps ensure agencies across the region are prepared to respond together quickly, safely, and effectively when every second matters.

Multiple Reno Fire Department crews recently took part in a residential fire training exercise that challenged firefighters to locate two victims inside a home with little to no visibility.

While training facilities are valuable, they can’t always fully recreate the layout and conditions of a real home. Using a residential-style building like this gives crews the opportunity to train in more realistic environments and better prepare for real-world emergencies.

BIG STORY
Every fire first responders go to is different, and the fire department can't perfectly recreate scenarios they might encounter at training facilities. That's why crews with the Reno Fire Department are training using buildings set for demolition. Alina Dangerfield reports.

Today is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day!

Recently, Chief Cochran, Councilmember Anderson, Fire Inspector Sky, and Fire Prevention Inspector Peterson spoke with media partners about the day and how small actions can make a big difference.

A few simple ways to get started:

• Create defensible space by trimming vegetation at least 5 feet from your home
• Clear dry leaves, pine needles, and debris from your yard, roof, and gutters
• Keep firewood and flammable materials at least 30 feet away
• Make sure your address is clearly visible for emergency responders
• Sign up for emergency alerts and have an evacuation plan ready: https://www.communityconnect.io/info/nv-reno

Wildfire preparedness isn’t just a one-day effort. It’s something we can all do together to help protect our community all year-round!
