We have high fire danger! Please consider holding off on any outdoor or open burning!

Thursday will be hot and WINDY.

Gusty winds of 25 to 35 mph are likely through the day.

Most people will say, "I didn't know it was going to be this windy!" But not you, because now you're informed.

This means the fire risk will also be high considering the heat and the wind.

Avoid burning.

That’s a wrap on 2026 Fire Camp!! 🎬

Today we wrapped up with an Extrication Demo- discussing the importance of seatbelts and car seats. The kids were able to see how and why responders operate the way they do on a wreck scene.

On to Weather Safety and preparedness- Joe and Mitch reviewed severe weather safety plans and the tools the kids were receiving.

The Roco Spay and Neuter Clinic joined us today to talk about pet safety! Learning how to keep our Pets cool, identify heat stroke, and how to safely remove ticks (how important for people too!)

Grain Bin Safety with Bailee & Douglas. The kids were able to learn about why grain bins are SO dangerous and how firefighters are prepared to do rescues!

On to Kona Ice and water games to wrap up the day- we all had to stay cool some how! 😉

We wrapped up the night with our Camp Dinner- the kids were able to show off ALL the things they learned this week!

Fire Camp Day 2!

What a day! A HOT day! We took advantage of ALL the shade today and kept our kids and volunteers hydrated.

Science of Fire with Joe & Mitch- we stepped up from the fire triangle this year and learned about the fire tetrahedron! We added in the chemical reaction & learned why certain smokes are different colors, certain objects burn faster & why smoke can actually catch on fire!

Kitchen Safety with Chrissy- Don’t let the Grease Goblin fool you- it can be scary! Kids identified kitchen hazards while the grease goblin floated around & learned how to safely put out kitchen fires (or how their parents should 😉)

CPR with Betty Jean and Bree- we definitely heard some “Stayin Alive” and “Baby Shark” being jammed out to while doing CPR! The kids stayed in rhythm, saved their manikins & were also able to practice the Heimlich during the CPR lesson!

Fire Escape & Calling 9-1-1 with Angie and Jerri- get low and go! Do you have your safe meeting place and fire escape plan ready to go and being practiced? Do you know what to tell the operators at the 9-1-1 Center when you call?

PTO Safety with Joe, Mitch and Scott- what is the safe zone when working around equipment with a PTO? What is a PTO? What happens when your clothes get caught (video to come!). The kids helped each other point out hazards and were able to check out just how powerful a piece of equipment with a PTO is!

The Explorers- today the explorers had it hard! today, they learned about the Holmatro Rescue Equipment & then played Jenga! They also had to pick up and egg without cracking it (we promise, it’s harder than it looks.) then on to lifting the tool box with the air bags….. without spilling their water! They worked as a team and done a great job!

Fire Camp Day 1!

What a BUSY day! We kicked off fire camp with a packed day and lots of fun. We were thankful for the breeze and all of our helpers! Today we had:

Water Safety with Joel- what are the colors we should wear to be seen when swimming? How should life jackets fit?

Livestock Safety & Handling with Kelly- what are the best ways to approach various livestock species? How do we handle them? What happens if they get stuck somewhere? What were some of the craziest rescues she had been on?

First Aid with Betty Jean and Bree- learning how to make slings and splints in an emergency, how to use tourniquets and how to make simple head bandages.

Trucks with Scott and Bailee- each group of kids are assigned a truck for the week to learn. Ask your kids- how much water does their truck hold? What kind of calls does it run? Which fire trucks don’t have any water on them?

The Obstacle Course- the kids got a look at the new props and raced as a team! Which group thinks they will be the fastest through the course by the end of the week?

We wrapped up our day with a visit from Deputy Anders along with Deputy Zach and K9 Ziva with the Rockingham County Sheriffs Department! K9 Ziva is an all around dog! She tackles suspects, finds lost kids and adults, finds random things we may lose…. Like a gold bar! K9 Ziva and Zach showed us how she works when she’s looking for lost things or people and we got to see a few tricks at the end!
