DE Center for the Inland Bays

DE Center for the Inland Bays OUR MISSION: To preserve, protect, and restore Delaware’s Inland Bays and their watershed.

If you live or vacation in south coastal Delaware…the Inland Bays are the Bays in Your Backyard. Three shallow bays- Rehoboth Bay, Indian River Bay and Little Assawoman Bay– lie just behind a narrow spit of land in sight and sound of the Atlantic Ocean. The bays serve as the backbone of Delaware’s coastal resort area stretching from Cape Henlopen to the north at the mouth of the Delaware Bay to th

e Town of Fenwick Island at the Maryland state line to the south. The watershed area also extends west to the headwater streams of Indian River and other tributaries, and the farm fields, millponds and marshes of Sussex County, Delaware.

Earlier this month, volunteers and staff members gathered at the James Farm Ecological Preserve for a native tree planting! 🌳

This planting was made possible through Delaware’s Tree for Every Delawarean Initiative (TEDI), a statewide effort working toward the goal of planting one tree for every Delawarean. As part of Delaware’s climate action efforts, TEDI supports projects that improve air and water quality, preserve soil, support wildlife, and help reduce greenhouse gases through tree planting and restoration.

Thank you to everyone who helped us grow a healthier future for the Bays! 💚

Looking for a way to celebrate World Ocean Day? We got you covered! 🌊 🌎

We're excited to collaborate with Big Chill Beach Club to celebrate World Ocean Day with our annual Beach Cleanup and Dine & Donate event!

Join us on Monday, June 8th, for a cleanup from 10-11 am as we help protect our coastline by removing trash from the beach and surrounding Delaware Seashore State Park. All necessary supplies, including trash bags, grabbers, and gloves, are provided. Check in for the cleanup will be located right at Big Chill Beach Club.

💙After the cleanup, stick around and grab a drink or bite to eat! From 11 am-3 pm, a portion of all purchases will be donated to the Center. 🩵

Happy World Bee Day! 🐝🌼

Today, we’re celebrating the incredible pollinators that help keep our ecosystems thriving and the community partners working to protect them. This year, we planted a mini forest at Carey Apiary to help provide vital habitat and food sources for bees, butterflies, and other native pollinators.

Located in southern Delaware, Carey Apiary is dedicated to supporting healthy pollinators through sustainable beekeeping, pollinator-friendly habitat restoration, educational apiary tours, and eco-friendly live bee removals that safely relocate honey bee colonies rather than exterminating them.

Healthy pollinator habitats support more than just bees — they strengthen biodiversity, improve ecosystem resilience, and help protect the health of our Inland Bays watershed. 🌱

✨ Volunteer Spotlight Time! ✨

Mike Spangler first discovered the Center for the Inland Bays through a horseshoe crab survey at Camp Arrowhead. What started as a single survey has grown into more than two years of dedicated volunteering and support.

Driven by a strong desire to learn and immerse himself in hands-on experiences, Mike has contributed to a wide range of the Center’s programs. From reforestation surveys and tree plantings to oyster restoration and horseshoe crab monitoring, his dedication is evident in every effort he takes on.

Mike is especially passionate about applying his knowledge of agricultural practices to help restore natural landscapes. He finds it rewarding to see the direct impact of this work—watching newly planted trees take root and grow, and witnessing the return of birds to revitalized habitats.

Mike’s favorite bay creature is the osprey, a species that has become a powerful symbol in the Inland Bays due to its successful recovery. He participates in the Center’s osprey surveys, helping monitor nests throughout the watershed. Being part of this effort is his way of contributing to building knowledge of these remarkable birds in their natural habitat.

Mike’s passion for conservation, willingness to learn, and dedication to giving back make him an invaluable part of the Center for the Inland Bays community. We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy, and enthusiasm he brings to every project, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact of his work for years to come. Thank you, Mike, for helping preserve, protect, and restore the Inland Bays!
