Our Mission

The Redwood Valley-Calpella Fire District exists for the safety and well-being of our community. The mission of the Redwood Valley-Calpella Fire District is to minimize the loss of life and property resulting from fires, medical emergencies, and other disasters. Using community supported, well-trained volunteers, we will accomplish our mission through prevention, education, fire suppression, medical services, and other related emergency and non-emergency activities. We will actively participate in our community, serve as role models, and strive to effectively and efficiently utilize all of the necessary resources at our command to provide a service deemed excellent by our community.

-------------

We rely on our crew of volunteer fire and EMS responders, the Fire Chief and staff to provide the manpower to cover the needs of the community. In addition to emergency response, our volunteers help with fire and life safety education around the community and attend regular training to keep their skills and knowledge current. Along with basic fire and medical emergencies, services we provide include structural and wildland fire protection, rescue and extrication, hazardous materials response, and water rescue. The department remains committed to the safety and health of all Redwood Valley and Calpella residents and visitors and responds accordingly.

As we move fully into Summer Wildland training, the tempo has increased for the Redwood Valley-Calpella Fire Department Volunteers.

Members of the volunteers have been participating in Helicopter Operations exercises at Lake Mendocino, practicing fire shelter deployment, and continuing hands on wildland fire training.

At the same time, our duty officers are also spending time in the classroom working through Incident Command Structure (ICS) training to help strengthen leadership, coordination, and emergency response capabilities.

All of these trainings help ensure our volunteers and officers are better prepared for whatever this summer may bring.

🌲 Don’t give fire a ladder.

Untrimmed tree limbs are one of the most overlooked hazards on your property. They can create a direct path for fire to climb from the ground straight into the canopy.

Here’s what to do now:

✅ Limb trees up to create space between the ground and canopy

✅ Clear debris and vegetation beneath your trees

✅ Keep branches away from your roof and chimney

Upcoming Perscribed Burn Scheduled for Covelo.

South Covelo Prescribed Burn Scheduled
Mendocino County, CA–The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Mendocino Unit will be conducting a vegetation management prescribed burn in South Covelo. This prescribed burn will treat approximately 1,000-acres of chaparral and understory vegetation within oak woodlands and mixed conifer habitats, creating a mosaic of variously burned vegetation and islands of unburned
habitat.

The South Covelo project is in the northeastern portion of Mendocino County, east of Highway 101, and
south of the town of Covelo.

Burning will begin on Monday, April 27th, 2026, and continue intermittently as favorable weather conditions present themselves, but end no later than Friday, May 15th, 2026. Burning will start at
approximately 8 a.m. and conclude at approximately 3 p.m. daily.

This project adds to significant work underway throughout the state and brings California one step loser towards meeting state fuels reduction goals directed by the California Fire Plan and the California
Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan. To track the progress being made, both in your community and throughout California, visit the CAL FIRE fuels reduction dashboard at
https://www.fire.ca.gov/what-we-do/natural-resource-management/fuels-reduction.

This project burn will be conducted under strictly controlled weather and fuel conditions. Smoke and aircraft may be visible in the area.

Rattlesnake Bite Safety

If someone is bitten by a rattlesnake, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms can begin within minutes or take a few hours, but can quickly become severe.

Signs may include intense pain and swelling at the bite site, excessive bleeding, nausea, swelling of the mouth or throat, difficulty breathing, lightheadedness, drooling, and in rare cases, collapse or shock.

What to do:

Stay calm and limit movement
Wash the wound with soap and water
Remove rings, watches, or tight clothing
Get to a medical facility as quickly as possible

What NOT to do:

Do not apply ice
Do not use a tourniquet or constricting band
Do not cut the wound or attempt to suck out venom

Constriction near the bite can worsen injury and increase the risk of serious complications, including amputation.

Wildland Training Underway

Redwood Valley-Calpella Fire Department Volunteers completed their first training hike of the wildland season, building strength and readiness for the months ahead.

Groot, Captain Robinson’s dog, also joined the crew though he preferred jumping in the lake over hitting the trail.

We’re proud of our volunteers as they prepare for wildland season.
