Redwood Soil & Water Conservation District

Redwood Soil & Water Conservation District The Redwood SWCD works with landowners in both rural and urban settings to carry out a program for the conservation of our soil and water resources.

Redwood Soil and Water Conservation District was established in January, 1953. Citizens of Redwood County were concerned about soil erosion by wind and water and its affect on water quality. Since the district's inception, many refer to us as 'Redwood SWCD'. The district was authorized as a result of the state legislature passing the Minnesota Soil Conservation District Law in 1937. The law enable

d farmers to organize for conservation purposes and gave them the power to enter into legal agreements and provide financial aid to landowners. Other powers and duties granted to districts include:

•Legal subdivisions of the state which can exercise public powers.

•May carry soil and water conservation measures on any lands in the district with the consent of the landowners.

•May cooperate or enter into agreements with any governmental agency or individual landowner for the purpose of carrying on a program of erosion prevention and control.

Earth Day—a day to reflect on the natural resources that make Minnesota’s outdoor spaces so beautiful, diverse and deeply woven into who we are.

Minnesota’s natural resources are more than scenic treasures. They sustain our communities, support our economy, and preserve the quality of life that makes our state special.

For nearly 90 years, Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) across America have partnered with people to deliver voluntary, locally led conservation solutions. Here in Minnesota, with nearly one district in every county, SWCDs share a simple but powerful mission: equip local landowners with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to care for their land.

Considering the area was in a Blizzard Warning, we had a great turnout for the 2026 Hwy 14 Tour – CLASIC event held in Lamberton on February 18th! We welcomed a group of 50+ people for a day of learning and discussion focused on strip till, cover crops, and soil health practices.

Thank you to our outstanding presenters – Pat Duncanson and Randy Depuydt – for sharing their practical insights, personal experiences, and honest conversations about profitability, efficiency, and stewardship. Their presentations made for great questions and engaging conversations with the crowd.

Special thanks to some of our wonderful Redwood County businesses who helped us create a door prize that showcased specialty food items available from our county — Grown in Grace Homestead, Rustic Iron, Demuth Family Cattle Co., and The Best Honey by Pfarr.

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather conditions to attend this event! Please reach out to our office if you want more information on strip till, no till, and cover crops!

Could implementing practices like cover crops and no-till on your farm work for you and your bottom line?

What if you could get paid to do it??

Renville and Redwood County farmers: Enjoy a free meal and conversation with area farmers at Duffy's on Thursday, August 8 at our Cafe Chat: No-Till and Cover Crops!

Phil and Robin Smith will share their journey in transitioning the family farm to no-till corn, soybeans, winter cereal rye, and year-round cover crops.

And, staff from Renville and Redwood SWCDs will present a pilot program that could help you fund implementing climate-smart practices on your farm.

Landowners also welcome to attend! Learn more and register at https://sfa-mn.org/events/cafe-chat-no-till-and-cover-crops/

Area II and Redwood SWCD’s erosion- and flood-control work with landowners benefits recently dredged Lake Redwood. It draws from a BWSR water quality and storage pilot program grant, NRCS assistance and a Redwood Falls contribution.
