AS AANHPI Heritage Month comes to a close, I’m
reflecting on the opportunity to celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities throughout San Mateo County.

One highlight was welcoming a delegation from the Kingdom of Tonga, led by Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Sinaitakala Tuku’aho, through the
Sister City partnership between the City of East Palo Alto and Kolofo’ou, Tonga. It was an honor to celebrate the enduring cultural ties, shared values, and connections that strengthen our communities.

Today, we honor the life and legacy of Clarence B. Jones, a civil rights leader whose voice and courage helped shape our country.

Earlier this year, I had the honor of welcoming him virtually as he accepted San Mateo County’s Black History Month proclamation. Even through a screen, his presence carried weight and reminded us of the responsibility we all share to speak out and stand up for justice.

His words continue to challenge us not to stay silent, but to lead with purpose and conviction.

May we honor his legacy by continuing the work, by lifting our voices, supporting our communities, and striving for a more just and equitable future for all.

Thank you and Rest in Power, Mr. Jones.

Today, we pause as a nation to honor the service members who gave their lives in defense of our country. Memorial Day is a moment of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Their courage is the reason we have the freedoms we often take for granted. Today, we remember not just their service, but their lives, their stories, and the families who carry their legacy forward.

May is Mental Health Month and recognized here in San Mateo County as a reminder to stop defaulting to “I’m fine” when we’re not.

Real strength looks like asking for help, resting without guilt, or being honest about where you’re at.

If you need support:

• San Mateo County Behavioral Health & Recovery Services
• StarVista Crisis Center (24/7)
• NAMI San Mateo County
• Call or text 988

Mental health is ours and none of us are meant to carry it alone.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Nancy McGee.

She was a committed leader who dedicated her career to supporting students and strengthening our schools.

My thoughts are with her family and the entire education community.

Proud to recognize March as Women’s History Month in San Mateo County.

Women across our community have shaped who we are through leadership, advocacy, innovation, and care. Their contributions, both seen and unseen, continue to move our County forward.

This month, I had the chance to celebrate and uplift women across our community, from a local luncheon to a powerful gathering at Domini Hoskins, and the Women’s Hall of Fame. At the Hall of Fame, we honored remarkable leaders — Andrea Jones, Terry Nagel, Alyson Suzuki, Danika Gonzalez Johnston, and Amani Shroff — each representing the strength, resilience, and leadership that defines our County.

I also want to recognize my colleagues Supervisor Jackie Speier and President Noelia Corzo. Your leadership and commitment to expanding opportunity for women and girls does not go unnoticed.

As liaison to the Commission on the Status of Women, I’m grateful for their ongoing work to advance policies and initiatives that support women and girls in San Mateo County.

This proclamation is more than recognition. It’s a commitment — to building a County where every woman and girl can live safely, lead boldly, and pursue their aspirations without barriers.

I stand with Dolores Huerta and all survivors of trauma. Your voices matter, your experiences matter, and you deserve to be heard, supported, and believed. There is an urgency to ensure survivors have access to care, justice, and the resources they need to heal. We must continue working together to build systems that are responsive, compassionate, and centered on those most impacted.

We can honor the work that has been done while also being honest about harm. Movements are not defined by any one person - they are rooted in the collective pursuit of justice for all. As we process and grieve this moment together, we must remain committed to supporting survivors and seeking accountability, both of which are essential to building communities grounded in dignity and respect.
