What's the biggest hazard risk where you live?

San Mateo County's draft Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) is open for public comment.

The LHMP identifies our risks from wildfires, flooding, earthquakes, severe weather, other natural hazards, and outlines actions to reduce damage before disasters happen. It also keeps San Mateo County’s 20 cities, unincorporated communities, and special districts eligible for federal hazard mitigation funding.

We want input from residents, businesses, and community organizations. Tell us where the plan is strong, what it misses, and what you would add.

The County of San Mateo’s 2026 One Day Homeless Count identified 2,240 people experiencing homelessness in the early morning hours of January 29, 2026.

Of those counted:

1,095 people were staying in shelter, up from the prior Count

1,145 people were unsheltered, essentially unchanged

This federally required Count provides an important snapshot, but it does not capture everyone’s path into or out of homelessness.

Since the last Count, the County’s network of services has helped 1,772 unhoused people move into permanent housing. The County continues to invest in:

Shelter and supportive services

Outreach to people experiencing unsheltered homelessness

Encampment response services

Financial help to prevent homelessness

Affordable permanent housing

Since 2013, the County has committed approximately $365 million in Measure K and other County dollars to create more than 5,100 affordable permanent homes.

An executive summary of preliminary findings will be available soon, and the full report is expected this fall.

Consumer Alert: The invasive glassy-winged sharpshooter has been detected on grapevine plants sold at Bay Area Costco stores on or after April 21.

If you purchased one of these plants, do not return, move, or dispose of it. Here is what to do:

• Place two garbage bags over the plant and secure them tightly
• Call your local County Agricultural Commissioner’s office:https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/exec/county/documents/countycommissionersealercontactinfo.pdf .For San Mateo County residents, call 650-363-4700 to schedule an inspection
• Do not place the plant in trash, compost, or transport it anywhere

The pest spreads Pierce’s disease, a bacterial infection fatal to grapevines that can also harm almond, citrus, and ornamental plants. Early action is critical. “Housing is not just shelter. It is dignity. It is belonging. It is the difference between surviving and being able to dream.” In recognition of Affordable Housing Month, the County of San Mateo is celebrating a major milestone: nearly 180 affordable apartments are now welcoming residents at Middlefield Junction in North Fair Oaks, part of a broader wave of 529 affordable homes coming online.

Since 2013, the County of San Mateo has invested $364 million through its Affordable Housing Fund to create more than 5,100 affordable homes. This is what that investment looks like.
