Several Redwood City Police Officer's Association board members attended the Annual Sequoia Scholarship Awards dinner last week. This annual scholarship is sponsored by the RCPD POA, San Mateo County Sheriff's Department and Redwood City Fire Department.

The Redwood City Police Department is mourning the loss of one of our officers who died today while on duty. Officer Gerardo Silva, 57, an 18-year veteran of the Redwood City Police Department, was working on patrol when he received a call for service at the Police Station this morning. When Officer Silva failed to come back in service after handling his call, police personnel began a search of the building when he did not respond to his radio. Shortly after the search began, Officer Silva was discovered within the police facility unconscious and not breathing. Officers immediately started CPR and application of the in-house defibrillator until Redwood City Fire Department and EMS personnel took over lifesaving measures. Officer Silva was transported to Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City where, despite additional emergency efforts by hospital staff, died of natural causes. He will be missed by all of us.

Deputy Jacob Steely had recently been offered a position with RCPD and it is with sadness we report he has tragically passed away after heroically saving his son's life. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Steely's family.
