Welcome to the page of the Redwood City Fire Department proudly serving the cities of Redwood City and San Carlos as well as areas of unincorporated San Mateo County. The Redwood City Fire Department includes seven fire stations housing: seven engines, one truck, one battalion chief and currently has over 90 staff members including firefighters, firefighter/paramedics, captains, battalion chiefs, fire prevention staff, training staff, and administrative staff.

Last week, Redwood City Engines responded for a report of a vegetation fire in the wetlands.

When units arrived, they found a small fire in the marsh with difficult access.

Engine 16 was able to make access on foot and stop the progression of the fire with wildland hand tools, until Engine 12 was able to drive to the fire and assist with water.

As a reminder, fires can start quickly and easily even on cooler days. Always use caution when using open flames or fire.

We were honored to return to the Stanford Autism Clinic this past Saturday for their annual Heroes and Friends event!

​Events like this give local youth and families a chance to explore the fire engine, meet first responders, and build connections in a calm, welcoming environment.

​Building trust and spending quality time with our neighbors is the best part of what we do. Thank you to Stanford for bringing everyone together, and shoutout to all the local law enforcement and community organizations who joined in!

Last month, crews responded to a report of a commercial structure fire.

When the first engine arrived on scene, heavy fire was noted throughout the building with flames being seen coming out of windows.

After quickly ensuring there no life threat inside the building, crews deployed hose lines from the exterior to contain the fire to the building. Because of the structural instability of the building, crews remained outside. We were able to deploy one of our drones to inspect the inside of the building when the fire was extinguished.

After two weeks on the Timber Fire Engine 612 has changed crews, while remaining there to continue assisting with the fire.

Engine 612 has proven to be valuable with its ability to pump and roll while also being a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

Unlike a standard fire engine, Engine 612 has the capabilities to drive areas we would otherwise not be able to access.

We are thankful for our crew who put in two weeks of hard work and the next crew who is continuing to do the same.

Engine 612 continues to stay busy on the Timber Fire.

Most recently, the crew supported fire suppression efforts by helping mop up an area that had crossed the control line.

We would like to congratulate Battalion Chief Balton on his retirement after 42 years in the fire service and 36 with Redwood City Fire.

Chief Balton joined RCFD in August 1990. He quickly promoted to the rank of Captain in January 1996, then promoting again to Battalion Chief in January 2001.

During his time as the longest serving chief officer in San Mateo County, Chief Balton was involved in numerous programs and advancements in the department and the county.

He helped develop the Paramedic Rescue Squad Program, the original Marine Unit Commanding Officer, and worked with the late City Manager Ed Everett on the original Mission Statement and Values for the city.

Chief Balton’s experience and leadership will be missed.

Thank you again Chief for all your years of service and dedication to Redwood City.

Yesterday Redwood City Fire sent Engine 612 out of county to Big Sur to assist with the Timber Fire as part of a strike team comprising of engines from different counties.

As a type 6 engine, E612 has 4-wheel drive with pump and roll capabilities that our regular engines do not have.

We currently have E16 out of county returning from assisting with the old trails fire in Spokane Washington and now E612 assisting in Big Sur.

We are always happy to assist wherever the need takes us.

As a reminder, services and protections throughout Redwood City and San Carlos are not diminished or affected. Stations are fully staffed and ready to respond to any local emergency.

As part of this year’s San Carlos Education Foundation (SCEF) Mayor for a Day experience, our young mayor spent the day touring several city departments, including a visit to the corporation yard, the City Hall’s server room, the police department, and finally our fire station.

We’re always honored to participate in this annual tradition and help inspire future leaders by sharing what we do and how we serve our community.
