Ever wondered what a heat pump is? A heat pump is an energy-efficient alternative to traditional furnaces, air conditioners, and water heaters. Simply put, a heat pump moves heat instead of making it, which means it uses less energy! 🌍

Main benefits:
🟢Heating and cooling in one system
🟢Comfort is better and more stable
🟢No natural gas = no carbon monoxide risk
🟢With incentives, upfront cost is often lower than installing a traditional AC and furnace!

After two semesters of hard work, our 7th Youth Climate Ambassadors cohort officially graduated! 🎓🎉

At their graduation earlier this month, students presented to peers, staff members, family, and friends about their Community Impact Projects during an engaging poster board showcase. These projects were designed, planned, and executed by our youth leaders to address climate and sustainability issues across San Mateo County.

Congratulations to our 2025-26 Youth Climate Ambassadors! Stay tuned for our next round of applications opening later this summer. 😄

Thank you to San Mateo County Office of Education, Peninsula Clean Energy, and Citizens Environmental Council for partnering on this program to help build the next generation of climate leaders!

♻️ Staff Spotlight: Meet Kiah!♻️

Kiah is a Climate Corps Fellow on the Communications & Engagement team, who has worked on our Youth Climate Education Programs over the past year! As her 10-month fellowship comes to an end, she'll be bringing her passion for education to a new role with the California Water Environment Association, where she will coordinate educational training programs for environmental professionals.

During her fellowship, Kiah helped facilitate the Youth Climate Ambassadors (YCA) program, a school year long leadership program that empowers high school students to become local climate leaders. She also worked on the Youth Exploring Climate Change (YECS) program, where she got to attend outdoor field trips designed to teach students about sea level rise, wildfires, and biodiversity.

Her favorite part of the job is helping students grow as climate leaders and environmental justice advocates! She believes that empowering youth about solutions to the climate crisis is a key factor to help ease the mental health challenges that come along with climate change. She wants more people to know about the great programs available at the County that make sustainable practices accessible and affordable for all community members.

One sustainable habit she practices in her own life is avoiding fast fashion by thrifting most of her clothes and opting for items with recycled materials when buying something new. She loves clothing swaps with her friends!

Thanks for all your hard work, Kiah. We wish you luck on all your future endeavors! 💚

In partnership with the San Mateo County Office of Education, we welcomed students from Half Moon Bay High School to County Center for a behind-the-scenes tour focused on green buildings and construction trades. Students explored how sustainability and innovation come together in public infrastructure and learned about career pathways in the green workforce.

Fun fact: COB3 is the first civic building in the country designed to achieve Net-Zero Energy! ⚡
