Earthquake Swarms and Seismic Gaps Along the Dead Sea Fault System

The Dead Sea fault system is an approximately 400 kilometer-long strike-slip plate boundary between the Arabian and Sinai plates. A new study, led by a team from Geological Survey of Israel - המכון הגאולוגי לישראל and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, examined seismicity along this fault system.

The team defined earthquake clusters and background seismicity using data collected between 1983 and 2023. They recognized 56 clusters, classified into four types: aftershock sequences, doublets, triplets, or swarms. Their analysis revealed certain spatial tendencies of cluster type. For example, aftershock type clusters are mostly located along the Dead Sea basin. For more information, please visit the paper.

RB CERT Team will have a booth at the Redondo Beach Fire Service Day open house @ Station 2, May 11th. The open house is fun for all ages. All RB CERT Alumni are encouraged to stop by and visit with the team, eat free hot dogs and learn more from the RB Firefighters.

We will have activity books for the kids (while supplies last) and disaster preparedness information for all. We will also have class information to share. Come meet the team and find out more about the RB CERT Team.
