Listen. If you like, I love it:

I don’t like them and actors have fought me on this for YEARS. I feel like it is a way to stay busy. But not a helpful way.

I love actors and I’m always trying to protect our mind. IMO - this isn’t one of them.

Let’s discuss.

Take your time with your auditions. Put your best work possible. Take all the time you need before the deadline.

And please stop listening to be who are not in the direction you want to be going. Or have not been where you want to go. 🤦🏽‍♂️

From an ACTOR standpoint.

This isn’t about politics.

It’s about career.

An actor got fired from a Bravo show because of a social media rant after the Super Bowl halftime show.

No one is taking away your freedom of speech.
But freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. Especially when you work for major networks like ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX.

On most of the shows I’ve recurred on, I’ve had to sign agreements like this. Not taking away my voice. Just the rules of engagement. I can do whatever I want. There may just be consequences.

A major director came into FTC and said when they were choosing a series regular, the studio went through actors’ social media. One actor had some questionable posts. Honest posts. It wasn’t worth the headache. They went with the other actor.

This isn’t new. This is social media.
Actors worry about follower count when they should be worried about what’s sitting on their feed.
I’m not saying don’t post.
I’m not saying don’t share your views.
Just don’t be reckless.
I would hate for you to finally get your breakthrough and lose it over a heat-of-the-moment post.

That’s the business.

I’ve been sitting with everything that’s happening in the world.

And I won’t lie, there’s a part of me that feels the weight of it deeply. When something real and painful is happening, it can make this whole actor conversation feel small. Auditions. Careers. Momentum.

All of it.

I felt that.

I also know this position well.

If I move forward like nothing is happening, people feel that too.

If I acknowledge it, there’s always a risk someone assumes intention that isn’t there.

So I took a breath and asked myself the only question that actually matters:

Does this work matter?

And the answer is yes. It always has.

Art has never been separate from the world.

And art has always been political.

Art is how we build empathy.
It’s how we feel someone else’s life for a moment.

How we understand experiences that aren’t our own.

That’s the job.

Yes or nah?

“Any agent is better than no agent.”

I keep hearing that.

Usually from actors who are frustrated. Or tired. Or staying somewhere they already know isn’t working.

And I just want to say…that might be your nervous system talking.
And the actor will always say “right?” “Know what I mean?”

Akt Akt. I’m not co-signing on that.

Because I’d hate for you to stay with a rep you don’t like or think is working for you.

And I’d hate to be that agent you’re staying with just…well, because.

This is a business. You are blocking both of you from making money. 

And sometimes…well, all the times you have to LET GO TO LET COME. 

An agent doesn’t make you legi.

Fear doesn’t build a career either.

What would you add?

Number 1 alone would have saved me so much heartache and a major depression after seven seasons on a show didn’t immediately turn into another show.

Nobody really talked about that part.

Back then, actors didn’t always share this information. Yeah, the real gatekeepers…
Actors, didn’t always help the new actors. New actors were the competition. 

Meanwhile, I was out there pounding the pavement, thinking something was wrong with me.

That’s a big part of why I’m so passionate about the Think Bigger Actors Summit. And why it’s free. (Comment SUMMIT)

Which are you? I’m trying to see something…

This is a hot take — or a DaJuan Take as I call them.

I believe we should be able to take a look at ourselves on screen without imploding.

And here’s the real question I care about:
Why would anyone else want to watch you if you don’t want to watch yourself?

Oof. Coming in hot.

Look, most of the time, it’s nervous system stuff.
Avoidance. Protection.
Old training that taught you to disappear instead of occupy space.

I think it shows up in auditions.
I think it affects how you adjust.
I think it shows up on set.
