September is National Preparedness Month! Join the Redmond Library’s Climate Action Group from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the Redmond Library for a Community Preparedness Fair. The City of Redmond’s Emergency Management and Sustainability teams will also be in attendance, offering guidance on how to build resilience for emergencies. Stop by and learn how to create an emergency communications plan, register for AlertRedmond, and get started on a personal preparedness kit. We look forward to seeing you there!

September is National Preparedness Month, which raises awareness about the importance of preparing for potential disasters and emergencies. This year, Redmond and King County are focusing on prepared neighborhoods.

Begin by taking a simple step to connect with the people around you, whether they’re your housed neighbors or members of the unhoused community. Building these connections will help each of you understand what support you may need during disasters ranging from fall storms to earthquakes. It’s a great opportunity to exchange phone numbers and get to know one another before something goes wrong.

From there, you can dig a little deeper. Learn more about what your neighbors may need during a disaster, such as how many pets they have, whether there are young children or adults with access and functional needs in the home, and whether anyone relies on medical equipment. Creating a communication plan together can help your neighborhood stay more prepared during emergencies, especially when regular city services may be busier than usual.

This past spring, we launched AlertRedmond, the City's official emergency notification system. With AlertRedmond, you can stay ahead of hazardous weather, local emergency declarations, public safety alerts, and more by signing up for Redmond-specific alerts.

To sign up, visit redmond.gov/AlertRedmondSignUp. Enter your contact information to create your Everbridge Community account and AlertRedmond profile. Check out our "How to Sign up" video at redmond.gov/AlertRedmond for detailed step-by-step instructions.

A routine test of the system will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Only those who have opted into the system will receive the test message at the contact methods they have provided. Routine tests are conducted annually by city staff to ensure system functionality and measure performance.

Redmond Fire is excited to host this year's Future Women in EMS & Fire Workshop from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Oct. 17 - 18, at the Redmond Fire Department. The workshop, delivered by King County and including over 14 other King County agencies, will provide a weekend of hands-on Fire and EMS activities, offering an opportunity to explore a career in the fire or EMS fields. Interactive activities, discussion panels, live demo viewings, and networking with EMTs, firefighters, and paramedics in our region will also take place. Applicants must be 18 years or older, and King County residency is preferred.

This workshop is inclusive of underrepresented genders, including women, women-identifying individuals, non-binary, trans, and gender non-conforming people who are comfortable in a space that centers the experiences of women in EMS/Fire.

With warmer temperatures, drier vegetation, and increased recreational activities, summer is a busy time for the Redmond Fire Department. Since May 1, 2026, Redmond Fire has responded to 31 vegetation and urban interface fires, 19 structural fires, 35 room and contents fires, and 183 vehicle accidents and fires. In that same time period, Redmond Fire provided emergency medical responses to 70 cardiac arrests, 70 strokes, and 15 pregnancy-and-childbirth-related calls. The department also responded to approximately 3,400 additional calls, ranging from automated fire alarms to elevator rescues and diabetic emergencies.

From our firefighters and drivers to our paramedics and administrative staff, our team is working around the clock to keep our community safe as we enter the peak of summer heat. If you see any of our staff around town, give them a wave and show your appreciation!

King County just released a new Wildfire Ready Toolkit. This is perfect timing as Western Washington’s wildfire seasons continue to grow hotter, drier, and longer. This toolkit is designed to help Redmond community members get their households ready for wildfire season. School starts back up this month, and that means our roads are once again a part of the classroom. Let’s show students what safe driving looks like.

Kids don’t always move predictably. They may step into a crosswalk while looking for friends, drop something near the road, or run back toward a bus without warning.

When you see a school bus or crosswalk, give the road your full attention:
• Yellow bus lights mean slow down and prepare to stop, not speed up to get past.
• Never pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk; it may be shielding a person you can’t see.
• Make eye contact with children and crossing guards before moving.
• Leave extra space around buses: children can appear from either side.

A few extra seconds behind the wheel could protect a child for a lifetime. Let’s make every trip to and from school a safe one.
